Why do we use "single blade folders" instead of old style slipjoints?

Sometimes it is the right tool for the job. I was about thirty feet in the air re-routing some cable on a truss because I had to move a light, and cutting the e-tape holding the cable in place with my Sebenza was a whole lot easier and faster than pulling the SAK out of my pocket. I guess it all depends on what you need a knife for.

First off, I dont think it makes any sense that a person doesnt carry a knife for SD. How many people buy a knife strictly for SD and how many people wouldnt use a knife if forced into an SD situation? Second, show me a multitool or SAK that has the grip, ease of pulling out, opening, closing and returning with one hand, blade quality, safety (lock and blade tang security), and convenient method of carry for a similar price. Why bother carrying a multi blade? Just wear a tool belt. Every person has to draw a line somewhere. I carry a leatherman, a ti lite, and a spyderco cara cara. Thinking about adding an ocasional 4 inch fixed to the mixture. One of the best pieces of advice concerning this subject IMO, is "better safe than sorry"

Hi All-

Haven't ever seen a one-hand-opening slipjoint on the market. I might be interested if they make mine with a Spydie hole and a clip.

Victorinox makes a one handed opening, locking main blade Trekker model. THe hole isn't a Spyderco hole, but looks like the thumbhole on some Benchmade knives.

I use an old Browning 3-bladed stockman (slip-joint). It is big enough and very handy. I have a small Swiss army style knife for dress-up times. It has a couple of small blades and a scissors, all in something the size of less than half of a credit card. It works great for cutting up lime for Corona's!!!

I have a Spyderco Native in my pocket that is my primary choice whenever something needs to be cut. However, I carry a Swiss Champ in my case that handles the tasks the Native won´t. Mostly, it´s easy of carrying that rules the question, that single blade cliped to the pocket will go unnoticed forever. I just grew tired of carrying the Swiss Champ on my belt.

Hi All-

Interesting...here is the blade suggested by Psychopomp above:

herbence2teststore1_1845_13595384

That could probably be pretty handy at just over $40.00 at the first place I saw.

Spyderco makes a one handed slipjoint, the Pride.

See it here

As far as why I dont carry slipjoints. Primarily because I like my fingers and therfore only carry locking knives. Pocket clips and one-hand opening is nice also for quick easy deployments but primary with me it's the locks. I don't currently own any folders that don't lock. As far as why I don't carry a locking multi-tool instead of a folder... well that a whole 'nother story. I have been trying to get in to the habit recently of doing exactly that. So far the main reason I haven't is mostly due to the fact that a good locking multi-tool like my Leatherman Wave (new version) weighs twice as much as my EDC folder (Ritter Grip) and is twice as thick in the pocket and belt carry is just not practical in my daily environment (though I consider it anyway). I may eventually replace my large folder with the my Leatherman Wave (or more likely I'd retire the Wave and get a charge for EDC) but at this point I'm still trying to get used to it as an EDC item.

I've got more knives than I can use, but I usually EDC a very small folder, a pocket sized folder and a large folder in a belt sheath. After I bought my LM Squirt and Juice, I've been using them more for everyday tasks. I don't usually have to face situations where I need a stout folder or fixed blade, but even then, the blade on my Juice is pretty good (the blade on my Squirt isn't even that great for cutting packages open, but I still like it).

Spyderco makes them. ;)

Pocket clip.

That's the reason for me. A small non-locking blade would handle most daily chores. (Except food prep, I do like to be able to cut a sandwich without getting condiments all over my hands.) But I digress...

I love SAK's, carry one of several often, and try to "make" myself use it. The overwhelming convenience, both of carry and of use, of a pocket clipped knife so exceeeds the one floating around at the bottom of my pocket that the SAK's end up having a tough time. -And I hate belt pouches so that's no solution for me.

I'm with Psychopomp, gimme' a Vic with a clip (not a multi-tool, I mean an SAK here) and I'd give it a hard look-see for edc. This is what Sal Glesser has done to us. ;)

I collect, carry and use both, but my slipjoints actually see more use for the type of cutting I do day to day. The great thing is that we have more choices in this era than any other so far.;)

What Bastid said, I carry both and they both get their far share of use.

I'm very satisfied with carrying a SAK along with a one-hand/locking knife that has a pocket clip.

Today for example I and opened a few packages with my small Sebbie. I was able to open, cut and close in about the same time that it would take to fish the SAK out of my pocket.

Also today I put a Case mini-Copperhead in my pocket instead of a SAK. It wasn't much use when I needed to open a Corona. :(

I have both...yet I use my Swiss Army more than anything else....usefulness in the current situation is the key to everything.

Zip ties. Yeah, I said it, evil zip ties. I cut enough in a day to be the sole reason for carrying a 4 inch folder.

Thanks for all the responses. Been interesting.

I can see I'm going to have to get a Victorinox Trekker. That's a sweet SAK.

Cheers,
David
