Ok, I have the feeling this topic has been covered before, but Im bored and its absolutely dead here at work, so here goes. Why do you buy HI khukuris? Are you obsessed with all things Ghurka? Do you just need a tool to get rid of that pesky stump? Are you in a MA that needs khukuris? Did God tell you that you must start buying as many khukuris as possible to fend off the coming zombie horde? Why?

Well, since I started the topic Ill add my reason. I buy khukuris from HI because it gives me a warm fuzzy feeling inside. One thing that always made me feel confidant in buying HI khukuris is that I know when I buy a Khuk from HI, I am not just another guy trying to buy the cheapest product from the poorest people. For me, everytime I buy an HI khuk, I feel like Im doing my little share, no matter how selfish, at helping someone less fortunate on the other side of the world. With HI, unlike many charities out there, I dont have to worry about money going to some slick corporate official. And the fact that we are truly affecting the lives of the kamis comes out when I pick up an HI khukuri. I have more than HI khukuris at home, but only HI khuks have that little special feeling that the kamis put into them that you feel when you pick them up. Yvsa told me when I first started buying khuks, that I would get a similar feeling picking up an HI khuk as I get when I pick up a real kris, and he was right. They may not be perfect knives all the time, or the best tools for every job, but one cant quantify the soul of a blade in mere specs. And that is why I am and will remain an HI customer.

Great thread, Fed:)

Pretty much the same thing here. I don't "need" more than a couple khuks, but i have a trunk full of them at home. They are beautiful handmade tools that will always be there. Always be ready to do their part in whatever i need. A man's blood and sweat went into making my knife. A prayer was said to bless the knife and guide it. It flew from the other side of the world to Reno where out of all the hands it passes through it chooses mine to call home.

Easy:

The HI philosophy -- "It's for the kamis," to simply and seriously use a turn of a well-worn phrase.

The high quality of the HI product. Good stuff.

The breadth of the HI product line -- something for everyone, with the occasional new offering popping up.

HI listens to the customer base and responds.

The camaraderie of the Cantina.

These are a few of my favorite things . . .

I buy HI Khukuris because I found out about them here. I was looking for MA info about them, and eventually found this site. I had owned Khukuris before, from the typical Atlanta Cutlery type to a few CS models over the years.

I have a similar feeling about them as I do about collecting Swiss rifles and militaria. The quality of the craftsmanship, the care that went into making them, and the values of the people who made them; independance, freedom loving, don't mess with other peoples business, pursuit of excellence, etc.

To me, guns with walnut and blued steel, esp. older ones, are more "real". I get the same feeling with HI khukuris. I also like the idea of supporting kindred craftsmen who make beautiful things with their hands.

Besides that, it gives me another reason to hang out here!

take care,

Tom

one glance at the UB Mem Khuk thread is explanation enough for me.

My money goes to folk who genuinely need and appreciate it (rather than making some multinational conglomerate and their stockholders wealthier)...and these are simply among the finest knives in the world, period....

Bought one. Liked it. Bought two more. Liked them. Bought a few more after that...

You know how it goes.

Well I oughta say, "Dayumed if I know." and leave it at that but like the reason for buying HI Khukuri's, or life, it just isn't that simple.

All of the reasons mentioned played a part in keeping me coming back for more but in the end it was Uncle Bill and supporting the kamis that was the big reason.
It didn't hurt that they were blessed with blood and made by people that I feel a kinship with.

We all know that two or three will handle most any job anyone needs a big knife for but I think most everyone is kinda like me and looking for that *one* khukuri that will handle nearly ever job to satisfaction and *look* like what we think a "real khukuri" should *look* like.
For me that is the 17" Foxy Folly in the ideal weight, or at least I'm hoping so.
Methinks it will be because the prototype I have is awfully dayumed close!!!! :D  :D

I am seriously considering selling off some of my khuk collection, up to and including my 18" AK with the two kardas I made for it, so I can get some of the newer models, as well as some different knives.
The new Katunje is one of them that appeals to me.

One of the new knives I'm getting comes as a blade only.
There were only 1,200 made on a limited edition made from a drawing off an original.
The museum that had them made was out but I found one at the Dixie Gun Works.
It's a knife I've wanted ever since I first heard of them.
A real ndn Russel Green River Beavertail Dag Trade Knife!!!!

it's the best hard working, field dependable, tough as nails, multi-purpose, hand made, 100% guarantee, absolute best value in the knife world today.

But what really puts it over the top? Put one in the hands of someone who has never experienced it and odds are, it will impart a feeling that can only be described as HIKV.

I think every collector here knows what that feeling was when they first grasped one.

Came for the knives, stayed for the freaks.

This says it all :)
The cantina, the spirit infused in the forum and company by Uncle Bill and Yangdu, and the creativity it inspires in the kamis really make it more than just a khukuri.
I just got a Trisul and it's more than a great knife. I just spent an hour putting a polished fighting edge on it. It's in its display stand in the parlor, right next to a Master Smith Bowie and a Randall. And it belongs there.
Even with all the custom knifemakers working today I don't know of an integral fighter that looks quite like this one, and it balances an inch before the guard just like it should. The tip is quick, and like a Bagwell Bowie, it has a dagger-like profile.
It's like there's karma in the blades. We're helping the kamis, and they're making us happy.

I buy HI khukuris for all the reasons above and because I find them appealing, especially since they were made to be used.

I like the authenticity, the uniqueness, the quality, the story and romance, the fact that they are made traditionally by traditional people, the fact that I can support honest people making a living...

I bought my first khukuri for many reasons, primarly it was curiosity, I had seen one years before and the description on the web was interesting. I bought more as the performance was solid and Bill's attitude was pretty much perfect.

It is easy to find huge performance claims. It is easy to find claims of blades used by "high speed operators". It is easy to find maker claims of their own "high speed" abilities which make their knives great.

It is not so easy to find people that will let you evaluate the performance and actually even encourage you to do so. Bill never needed to aggressively promote the knives because they did it for themselves.

There are of course a whole host of other reasons, considering where the money went and what it did and continues to do could take pages. Here is the short of it - they are great knives, made by, and sold through, great people.

What else could you want?

Because they have:

Quality

Great Prices

Balance

Look

Power

Effectiveness

Presence

Lifetime warranty

Good people making them

Good people buying them

They give me a visceral response (warm feeling in my gutsy-wutskies)

and most importantly THEY HAVE SOUL!

Multi-functional living art.

Khukuris are enlightenment.

You either get it - in a flash! - or you don't.

Like a mathematical equation proved to be true, the khukuri is a good idea that continues to be good in all its forms.

Short one- good idea. Long one- good idea. Ugly one- good idea. Lovely one- good idea. Which is best? They're all best.

See Kismet's "One man can make a difference" post from the Salyan sale post.
Our khukuris are made out of more than just steel...

Ad Astra.

There is little I can add to what has already been said. However, I have to say it-these knives have raw sex appeal!
