Why Do You Buy Knives?

I've been interested in knives since I was about 8yrs old when I got my first pocket knife (yes I cut myself with it too). I am not a special ops operator, self-defense expert or survivalist. I like outdoor activities, i.e., hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, etc., and I buy some of my knives to use in those endeavors. I also buy knives for EDC for cutting various items. Having a knife on my person is like wearing a watch, I just have one with me all the time. I also go through phases, I will buy a knife maybe once in a year or when I got on a kick with collecting for investment (Case Classic Whittlers). But then I will go through a period when I have to have several new knives. I have plenty, I don't need anymore, I just want some new stuff. The wife asks me why I need so many knives and I tell her because the knives I have are old and I need some new ones. I can't or won't pay big$ for a handmade knife made by a famous bladesmith. I don't have that kind of money for that luxury but also, I wouldn't use one of those knives because of the amount of money I forked out for it and don't want to ruin it. The knives I buy I will use at some point. I will buy production "collaboration" knives that are made by well known knifemakers, i.e., Ken Onion, Crawford/Kasper, Walker, Wenger, etc., etc. Thus I will buy certain models from companies like Kershaw, CRKT, etc. I like some of the knives like the Ken Onion Boa, Leek, Splinter and Whirlwind by Kershaw. I like some of the collaborations with CRKT such as the Van Hoy Snap Fire, Fommer Full Throttle, Kasper Professional and Montana Gentleman, etc. I also buy knives from Benchmade and Spyderco for more real world use. I just like knives in general and cannot give a real reason for having the amount that I do (approximately 40 knives) other than I like having a variety of knives...and I will buy more when I see something I like. Why have 1 or 2 expensive famous handmade knives when I can have the variety that I have and actually use them?

started when i was a kid, around 12. i ordered from catalogs, mostly cheaper stuff. i did get a gerber tac II that was around 150, which was then stolen by a friend.
got the bug around 5 years ago again. and now have a decent job so i buy what i like, busse, swamprat, emerson, strider.

Ive been into knives since i was a young kid, 6-7 years old. I go through phases where i'll buy a bunch of knives over a few months, or I may not get one for a year or two. This is a good year for me, i've bought about 10 new knives. I like to use the knives I have, there for I don't drop a ton of cash. Ive never spent more than $250. However, the older I get the more I find myself eyeing more expensive, custom knives. At some point I will drop $1000+ for a really nice gents folder. Carry it till I grow old then pass it down to my son.

I buy knives for two main reasons.

One is because evolution/Mother Nature/God didn't see it pertinent to give me long sharp and pointy claws :p :D .

The second reason is those damn blister packages ;) !

You don't have to have a reason to buy a new knife... I used to collect
pre-64 Winchesters. Most of them would never get hunted with, although I would shoot them. Didn't stop me from buyin more though. You don't have to spend 300.00 on a new knife to enjoy it. However I do understand why people buy those knives. To answer your original question , I buy them because I like the way a knife looks or feels in my hand. Makes it even better for me if I can look forward to actually using the knife on my next hunting or camping trip. You can never have to many.....

I buy some of them because I need them. I carry knives for work and for self-defense. But I also buy knives because they appeal to me aesthetically. The blade shape, the handle perhaps. Sometimes the knife is connected to a wish I have to undertake a particular activity where I would use that particular knife.

I also like change. I like to use/carry different knives, the same one gets boring for me. Why do I change clothes;variety is the spice of life!!

I buy knives to irritate my Wife.

She doesn't mind it too much.

I better get on the ball and order some more knives!

Most of my knives are my tools of trade, I'm a commercial bookbinder. I use some kind of knife all day, every day. They range from a pocket OLFA to 55'' guillotines. I'm also a knife pack rat, I allways need a new knife but never throw any away. I recently started collecting old hunting and skinning knives, so the pack rat pile is getting much much bigger.

I agree with ""pkdmslf"" 100%!

I have loved swords & knives since I was young, mainly because my father had a lot of "toys" laying around.

I too only by production knives and do have 35 production "toys" laying around. Favorites being the Becker Brute, Blackjack Anaconda II, Kabar D2 Extreme, SOG Satin Tech Bowie, Ontario ASEK, TOP 107C Steel Eagle, TOPS Lone Falcone, etc... I have rarely spent over $200, although I must admit I recently added a Chris Reeve Green Beret 7" to my list!

Will I ever use most of them, No. But it is fun to have and handle some of this magnificent knifes and knowing that you did not pay $$$ for them, there is a chance you might scoop one up for your next camping trip - why not?

I buy knives for one very simple reason - because I CAN! :D

At last count, I had something over 400, mostly folders, new, old, good, bad, and ugly. Some get carried and used a lot, some occasionally, some gather dust. Some I love and others I can't remember why I ever bought. Some I keep around just to remind me what a waste of money a $5 knife can be. I even have a (very) few that are strictly display pieces.

Yes, I am a knife knut, and that is reason enough for me :D

I buy all of my knives to use. I have three uses for my knives: EDC, Hunting, and Hiking. I pick out knives based on what others have said, how much money I have at the time, what I'm going to use it for, and just how what I think about that design at that specific time.

#1 I buy them since they are looked on by liberals as evil weapons.
#2 Because I have an uncontrolable adiction and hate to ever have money.
#3 Because the Fiancee hates to see me spend all my money on them.
#4 Because I can.

ED uses (not erectile disfunction).
SD (less than likely, but I'm willing to go to the extreme under certain circumstances).
But after so many purchases, it's just emotional, which is completely fine.

Why do people buy new clothes when old ones work just perfectly? To show off, to feel better- it's all emotional at a certain point.

My reasons are short.
1. My dad got me started and we still enjoy knives.
2. Friends that make them.
3. Other friends that collect them.

First post here.

I have always loved knives, grace of lines, style, utilitarian simplicity... and feeling of safety (naked without one)...

On a trip to TiJuana with the family when i was around 10yo, i snuck out to the bathroom and bought a stellito. A year or two later it was a switchblade. All junky, but the operation facinated me... and the bad-boy appeal.

Today, those toys dont interest me, and my edc ususally switches between spyderco-delica, benchmande afck, and just this last week i got a ti-lite 6" zytle, and I think its dreamy (removed the stud, use pocket open)... its slick for sure...

I came to this forum looking for a megga strong hunting/camp/chopper,... currently thinking about the swamprat M9-

Sir, you are a man after my own heart. Got my first knife at 8, never think of using for SD, only buy users, always have one on me. I think you got me beat in number.
