why do you buy these?

There are a lot more Bruks in use from what I have seen so you would expect more problems to be reported.

I was just going to note the same thing, thank you Cliff.

I have a GB Small Forest Axe. In terms of the productivity gains I have recieved using a quality product, I got a return on the extra $50 bucks a long time ago. It's all about the calories!

If anybody has a GB Wildlife hatchet they want to get rid of, let me know.

Slightly off topic but so has every other post so here goes.:D Anyone have "how to" link on how to properly rehandle an axe?

This will work as general instructions, but to do a workmanlike job of it, the job can get a bit more complicated and tedious. I'll not attempt to explain here what took me years with a mentor to learn, since I would probably only confuse you. Many companies supplying hickory handles will provide you with an instruction sheet which is pretty straight forward.

If you want a truly professional custom installation (particularly if you prefer a cast in the handle as I do) search out an Amish or Mennonite community. I guarantee they have a man who specializes in hafting tools.

I have to agree with the hardware store ax ive never had a problem with my 20 dollar home depot POS hatchet. Routinely use it to dig in the dirt to whack roots. some tools there is no sense spending tons of cash on when a cheep one works as well as if not better then the high performance model

Funny how this forum is inconsistent.
Cheap axes OK but God forbid one buys a cheap knife.

I like a lot of cheap knives.

I've never paid $150 for a single knife in my life. Quality knives are out there day in and day out for less than fifty.

A Western, a Marbles Woodcraft, and a Remington, all pre-1940, all three for less than $100. Can anyone point out anything wrong with these three cheap knives, other than the poor scan? (Camera donations gladly accepted):D

I have recently performed a lot of internet searches for the GB Mini-Hatchet and haven't found a single reference to a broken one (nor any other broken GBs for that matter)? Can you direct us to some references?

outdoors-magazine.com
or do a search on this forum for Ganfos bruks, go to page 2 and there is a post titled "I should have brought a khukri". Farther down in that thread hollowdweller gives a link to outdoor-magazine.com

hey, as you guys have probably notice the outdoor site is down, or at least its not workin for me. But as for the gransfors never breaking ( on the net ) I think its fair to say I haven't read, or heard of a wetterlings breaking.

Runningboar,
from the picture and description your hatchet looks like a shinglers hammer. It is used for working wood shingles ie cedar shakes for siding and roofing.

If you can read German, there are some threads about broken GB hatchets on Messerforum. I saw pictures of two different examples that had chunks break off the edge (and I mean large chunks) when chopping wood.

As cliff said there are more out there, so there could well be more failures.
I'll add to that...failures attract much more attention than 'just another good purchase that works'

Fords or Ferraris?
There is a butt for every seat :D

I bought a GB Wildlife hatchet and it's work great. I've split wood done some careful tree liming, hammered tent steaks, and field dressed, skinned and quartered a whitetail with it just to see if it/I could, we could.
I don't know if a less expensive hatchet would work as well because I haven't tried one and I'm happy enough with mine that I won't need to.
Oh yeah and the next fish I catch I'm trying to fillet with it.
