Why Do You Carry A Knife?

An interesting thread, and a variety of responses that make interesting reading.
The obvious answer of course is "to cut stuff with", but on reflection, I believe Brewthunda (post#36) made a very valid point with his his #3 reason, "---a manly form of jewelry".
Most of us are really keen to have an elegant or well engineered knife on us in preference to the merely useful, otherwise Opinels and similar would be everywhere.
There is a pride of ownership and pride in the ability to produce a good knife when required that all knifenuts will appreciate.

A knife is a handy, practical time-tested tool to have around. Couple a good knife with a good SAK and you can handle all sorts of chores that crop up day to day.

Don't forget pencil sharpening...cutting annoying wads of tape...emergency fingernail tool...emergency belt hole maker...prying open the cd drive on a very dead computer...
