why do you carry those knives?

OK, a variation of the ESD carry question. I hope you don't mind. I guess if you do, I won't get any responses. But, I'm really curious. The question is, "Why do you carry the knives that you do?"

Me for example. I carry a Benchmade Nimravus Cub in M2 for my everyday, do everything, cut anything, and emergency knife. I carry it for this because it is a fixed blade and a great steel. I also carry a Spyderco Standard, to use in front of the sheep because the BMNC would scare them, and I use it to open mail, open packages, open potato chip type food packs, etc. And finally I carry one knife that I never use, and hope to never use for the purpose that I carry it: self defense. That knife is the Benchmade 710 Axis Lock. It can always be with me (well, everywhere except the airlines and court), and I would trust it more than any other folder I know. And it can always be explained as just a razor sharp utility knife.

Oh, and there's the Victorinox Executive, for peeling oranges, tightening the occasional screw, and such.

Anyone else have specific ideas for the knives they carry?

I try to maintain the philosophy that Knives are Tools, not weapons unless under attack (which I generally speaking am not). I will admit that in tense situations it is comforting to know there is a little security in having a knife, but again as a tool is the most important aspect to me.

Hi, I agree with Elvislives. If you ever have to use any of your knives to defend youself, you absolutely will want to refer to them as tools & not any thing else. It sounds much better to the assorted people you'll then be dealing with: Police Officers, Laywers, Judges, etc. By the way, I have a INFI Busse Mean Street for every day fixed blade carry. It's under 4" & looks very ordinary & non-threatening to all the non-knife people out there. Also, I could probably cut my way out of my truck if I needed to, it's that tough! Great Knife!!

Good question, I almost started to post reasons next to my responses, the food prep was the only one I did there but here lies some of the reasoning, as I'm asked this all the time, over the holidays I had 9 knives on me and at the family get together they actually had a pool going on how many I had that day!

The SAK Executive as mentioned above the orange peeler is useful and really works!
The finger nailfile is used all the time, can get dirty out there.
The scissors for a variety of things, mustache hairs and nose hairs.(sorry)

M2 AFCK, cutting thick material the blade length helps, thick foam material when boxing up rush orders at work or slicing through thick plastic wrap. Grunt work mainly!

William Henry Lancet, just plain purty! Envelopes and to impress the folks here abouts, plus I get lost looking into the Mother of Pearl sometimes, maybe a great stress relief tool?

SAK Cowboy, food prep knife, flat grind long blade only cuts food, no toenails for this puppy!

David Boye Cobalt folder, opening boxes cutting plastics or fiberous material, really excells at that.

On the belt a variety of knives make their appearances, depending on the mood when I wake up in the morning, usually one of the Sebenzas or Umfaan as today, or the Mike Irie swinglocker. just depends.

There now I feel refreshed and exonerated.

The Victorinox Electrician has 2 blades and a Phillip's (sp?) head screwdriver. It is usually enough to get most cutting jobs done, but I still can't wait to get some new ones. A Phillip's is always a good idea to have on you. I should probably get a Classic, as they're handy little tools, too. The problem with the 2 SAK's I DO have is that they have almost NO defensive capabilities whatsoever (The screwdriver could work though). This has not ben a huge factor though, as I am not very worried about being attacked.

Time ran out and got a double post, sorry bout' that!

I guess the main reason I carry a knife is because my dad did. He wasn't a hunter he was a Printer by trade, he used his knife for work, he didn't know that knives had names, styles or manufacturers. Using a knife as a weapon would have been incomprehensable to him, you couldn't ruffle his feathers with a sledge hammer. I would end up with his cast offs and I loved them. When I became a Cub Scout, that's when he bought me my first knife.
Over the years I've carried many different knives for many different reasons, not all of them would have made my dad proud.
Now I carry a knife because I would feel naked without one, but I look at them now more like my dad did.

The only knife I always carry is my Adventurer SAK. It has a 3.25" locking knife blade, phillips and flat screwdrivers, can opener, bottle opener, awl, tweezers, and toothpick. I use everything on it at least once a week. The blade is razor sharp and big enough for some defensive utility, but I never have trouble taking it onto airplanes. I open envelopes, boxes and skin game with the blade. I wish the blade was slightly thicker and made out of BG-42 or A2, but it works awfully well for 420HC.

I use my delica for general cutting- rope, boxes, etc.
I use the blades on my gerber multi pliar for abusive cutting - stripping wires, sawing through tree branches, scraping things off.
I usually have a 4"trapper with me to loan to anyone that wants to borrow a knife. Its scary sharp like the delica but they figure out how to close it without cutting off a finger since it doesn't lock open.
I use the multi pliar a lot. I work on a farm baling hay and straw and wire cutters are a must have. The other tools come in handy for fixing small stuff or putting things together.

It seems I have carried and used a knife since my dad gave me his old Barlow. I have needed one during my military service and for my job until I retired. Today I carry one mostly to open boxes, letters, and those damn
cellophane bags.

Funny thing reading the responses. My dad never carried knives, didn't hunt and only fished a little. Pretty straige for a country boy. Now I have a son and he likes all the things I am in to including knives. It is really nice to have someone who shares your likes as much as my boy does. It is also nice to be able to teach him about such things. When I talk about ATS-34, or AUS-8, he knows what I am talking about. We carry knives because we like them and we are tickled to be able to use them, even if it only to clip a string on a new shirt. I have taken to using mine more around the kitchen since my folders are much better than any of my kitchen knives.

Just fun to play with.

I carry my Deluxe Tinker because it is so darn handy! I use it for general cutting tasks. In addition, the various other tools are useful. If I need to tighten a screw, I'm not forced to stop what I am doing to go look for a screwdriver. I encourage everyone male and female to have an SAK!

The pair of Delicas are there for those times when I need a one-hand opener. Of course, in a pinch, either or both could be used for defense.

The final reason I carry multiple knives is the best---I like them!

I carry a Delica for legality and general cutting. I carry a Moran for general tasks whereas my Mean Street for general tasks, if a material is thick or if I actually have to pry something. It's thick enough that I could probably break a window. Cutting tasks, defense, legality are my primary reasons for carrying.

I carry a variety of folders and fixed blades on a daily basis: the Spydie Rookie for office chores, the REKAT Carnivor if I'm feeling "clawless" or in a bad part of town, the Emerson La Griffe ALWAYS, the Griffith Tracker at night (joined now by the Patrolman). Sometimes the CQC7 replaces the Carnivor, but not too often. I carry because a)I find uses for my blades daily and b)what MDP said: I have no claws or fangs, and am not always carrying my Springfield.

Because I must. I am fortunate to have a job that requires the use of tools, and one of the primary ones that I use is a knife. I also carry an additional knife for food preparation.
