Why do YOU collect Knives?

Jim, That's almost as good a question as "why do you love your wife?" - I don't have a clue ! but I sure do...
Have to agree with the "primal" thing - and they are lots more "politically acceptable" than the 150 or so hand guns I used to own... cheaper too ! and there's no amo cost or reloading to fool with.. just the occasional sharpening.
My Grandfather gave me my first knife.. so maybe it's a generational thing.. Come to think of it - he taught me to sharpen too - he was a cabinet maker - chisels had to shave!
Then there's appearance.. I still think -perhaps misguidedly that the old Gerber FSII in brass and whatever wood was a thing of grace and beauty.. but so's my Delica or old case stockman..
Who the H..l knows and more importantly who the H..L cares... just send more knives.

knife Knuts are sharp people

Jonesy!

Well, "collect" implies putting knives in a case and looking at them, which I don't do.

Knives are a more focused pursuit than the ordinary lusts of men and women. Most want this furniture, that car, these pots, that house, and so on. I may never make a large purchase in my life that might in any way be considered "luxury"; such money would be better spent on 60 or 70 knives.

In comparison to a shining knife, which will cut almost anything, the desire for couches seems dissipated and banal.

Also, I am a fiend and cannot stop

When i said collecting, i didn't mean to imply putting them in a cabinet and looking at them. All my knives are used hard and often. I just used collecting because no other word seemed to fit.

Everyone, hopefully has something that interests them. Some people like cars, some people like to spend thousands of dollars installing stereo systems in them. We just like knives, no different. When someone asks me why do you spend hundreds on knives, I say what do you like? The lucky ones have an answer. Be glad we do.

Strange thing though. I feel that no matter what I decide to do with myself, whether I collect guns, knives, stereo equipment, or pound puppies (dont hold your breath on this one), I'll end up spending the same % of my net income on the hobby. Is it the same with you folks?

not2, I know it is for me. Last year it was on a computer, before that woodworking equipment, stereo, CD's, books, cameras, women (now I'm going back a ways). I'm fairly consistant at about $2000 a year on toys, the rest of my money I just wasted.

I collect knives for a lot of the above reasons. I like the primal theory too. One of the best things about collecting knives is finally finding a knife that you have been looking for, for a long time. Also coming across a knife that you didn't know existed, but just have to have now that you have seen it. What a feeling!

Recluse said it very well I think. I too enjoy knives for the way they look, feel in my hand, and the way they work. I am amazed at what creative minds and skilled hands are able to produce from raw material. I just enjoy the fruits of their labor.

I just plain like 'em. Specially the really good ones. But unlike my guns, I've gone out and bought all but my very first knife. Most of my firearms were handed down to me.(Although the tradition in my family is that a gun is NEVER a gift. There is always a symbolic monetary transaction, used to be a dime, but with inflation, it's up to a buck. About 70% of my firearm collection has cost me a total of about $5.30)

It's utility and defense for me. However, a good sharp knife is a pleasure to use. Cutting should be smooth, the knife should be extension of you, and sharpness should be a REQUIREMENT not an option.

As a little child I would heat nails in the charcoal grill and pound them into swords. In high school I would go to the army surplus store (used to be real military stuff) I wish I still had all of them. Then I got busy with 'life' for the last 30 some years or so. Now I feel I'm coming full circle rejuvenating my interest in knives. Because of the internet allowing access of like minds, largely through this forum I have decided not to question it any further. Just enjoy.....

Knives are just great!I collect them for many of the reasons that have been put forth already. They connect one to the lost primal self, they give one a sense of power, they exhibit the ingenuity of the mind.Obtaining more and more and learning about them constitutes a hobby, and lastly, they are just plain beautiful. Each well made piece that is created with the proper ergonomics and balance is like a new add-on option.Something of a prosthetic limb, so naturally having more is better

I really don't know why I collect knives and also have been asked this question by many. I just plain like KNIVES. Like others have mentioned, it's an illness with no cure!

No cure? No cure? Whaddaya talking about? The cure to knife collecting is to buy more knives.

BTW, I don't collect knives. They just remain in my wake on the search for the perfect one

I mistakingly thought it would be cheaper than "Guns".....Oh the Horror of it all!!!!.................

Contrary to popular opinion, just because I have a collection of knives doesn't make me a knife "collector".

I aquire a knife if it is well built out of fine materials and the finished look is good. The knife must also feel good in my hand and be fun to play with.
