Why do you hate Assisted Opening?

That would make sense - the thumblugs are blade stops right? Stops it from swing around over the top.
Sorry Cziv, I dont know if i am understanding your post.
Yes, on the leek, the thumbstuds are also blade stops. The retention issue I was referencing deals with the fact that the blade will not stay shut. The blade doesn't have a ball detent and swings freely when the AO is busted.

there's also the hypothetical but not entirely implausible scenario of interacting with a police officer not familiar with the differences between AOs and switchblades.
I think this is bullcrap. There should be no situations in which an ordinary citizen understands the law better than the law enforcement officer. Assisted blades are NOT automatic (even though they're just as fast), but they could easily be misinterpreted as an illegal weapon. That's incredibly frustrating. >:(

Sorry, the Leek I have is Random Leek, a framelock w/detent ball and is a flipper a/o like the 0301 which stops at the handle too. Not sure if that helps at all.

I like my assisted-openers. The biggest drawback, in my opinion, is that they are more difficult to close, and potentially more dangerous if you're not paying attention. I gave myself a good little cut closing my Blur. My index finger slipped off the spine while pushing it closed, the blade jumped back open, and my finger moved back up as a reflex to "catch" the blade. Wasn't thinking... Bad idea...

Used to not be a huge fan of A/O's until I got my hands on a ZT0300... what a beast. I love the opening of the Leek as well, I think Kershaw has the assisted opening thing down, i haven't been able to like any other company's A/O offering thus far.

Right on.... Now I'm getting it. The leek that I had was the G-10 linerlock with s30v blade. It didn't have a ball detent. That's interesting that the framelock version does. Thanks for the clarification and the education.

google this model - Random Leek 1660TGRYST S30V - it makes standard Leeks look like puddy tats.

It fires hard and feels rock solid with an excellent blade. Best S30V I've ever sharpened.

Because my thumbs open my knives without me thinking about it and with a flipper/no stud design.... exactly how am I supposed to open it one handed if something stops it from opening.... flick it? Nah, I trust my thumbs.

They are illegal to carry where I live. And on larger knives, like the ZT's, the blade is slow coming out and i think it would actually be faster WITHOUT the assisted opening.

Because of police ignorant to the law, I have had two assisted openers taken from me so I now carry a copy of Maryland's knife law's in my pocket wherever I go

Have you joined KnifeRights? You should, and you should make them aware of the problems you have encountered.
