Why do you have a tomahawk?

Do you plan to use it as a weapon, tool or both?

I bought one but then kind of want another one. :-)

It takes too much practice to make an effective weapon. I just use it for wasting effort chopping wood. It really isn't the best tool for the job, but it's just fun :p

I bought my SOG Fusion tomahawk mostly to have a good new throwing weapon. I have thrown knives for years but wanted to get good with a weapon/tool that is potentially useful for something other than just throwing. Throwing knives are good for throwing and that is basically it, as everyone no doubt knows, but a hawk is quite a bit more versatile.
As funny as it may initially sound, in reality, I would not recommend throwing your tomahawk at an enemy unless they are in your perfect range spot and they do not know it is coming. Not a very sporting way to go about it, but there it is.
I think it would be much better utilized as a CQB weapon than to risk losing it by throwing it, or worse yet, throwing and missing your target and arming your enemy with a weapon to engage you with.
I agree with you Grease, that for the most part it takes too much practice time to be an extremely effective weapon, but if you give it to anyone, you still have definitely increased their chance of doing some serious/lethal damage to you with it.
But back to the original question, I bought my tomahawk becasue it is awesome and is a more productive way to waste time than throwing knives.

As I got more into knives, I got more knives. There's only so many that I "need", so Tomahawks weren't much of a jump for me. I like their history and various styles, as well as their many funtions.
As for weapons, in these modern times, we all reach for the guns. It's a good idea to have a back up to those guns, a knife or a hawk, or both are fundamentals. I find the power of a hawk to make it a more useful weapon, when compared to a knife. I guess it's physics, the weight in the head, and the extension of one's arm, but the right hawk can be a very serious weapon.
A hawk can do so much more as a tool vs. being a weapon, no need to make a list. But, I'd take a hawk into war or an apocalyptic scenario without hesitation. A knife also has it's place, but I do practice fighting with a hawk.
I hope I never need any weapon to fight with, but it's good to be prepared. I have one fighting hawk, my others are tools moreso than weapons.

Where i live, it's difficult for me to have a gun permit unless i have an orchard or work for the defense department, reaching for anything closest to me is crucial and i must be able to judge if it's essential enough to impose threat.(Cursive words need not apply)
I'm more trained with knives but tomahawk can be fun. Don't throw them often but i use mine more on chopping and breaking things.

I have been looking for a good all around chopper/cutter/farm tool that I can take on the dirt bike, 4 wheeler or utility vehicle that can handle whatever I need it to do. I've tried large Bowie's, various models of kukri including traditional and modern, hatchets, forest axes, machetes, tracker knives, etc.; so for me the tomahawk is just next in line. I have been using it a lot and so far I like it.

Hey Jay, how many trees does it take to make an orchard? I'm just sayin.....

I saw the hand forged ones here and just had to get one. No other reason. It resides under my bed. If they fit in my pocket, I would buy more - just like knives. I really should stop buying knives.

I've always carried an axe when hiking/camping/4x4/whatever else can fit in here. The tomahawk caught my attention and have found it a great replacement for a normal axe. So many more uses than just a weapon, not as good as a good hand axe for chopping but it makes up for it in that the handle can be easily replaced, I use the spike for digging and other uses that I come up with, blah blah blah. Plus I know how to use a knife but I would rather have the tomahawk in a fight.

Oh and the main reason, they just look good.

I have a good time throwing mine, haven't used it at all for any utility/work. The head is probably too small to process wood and I have axes. I imagine it would make a heck of a weapon, not sure how much training i'd need to whack somebody with it. I'd expect not much.

I have tomahawks just for fun. I'm hiking out in the woods a lot but I dont bring a hawk because anything more than a little mora is overkill (and the mora just sits in my emergency kit). At home I have better tools. If I was worried about personal safety well there are guns for that.

I have a sog fusion it is handy! use it to chop out roots of bushes, trim trees etc. I can always find it, damn sturdy thing. And I think it would good for self defense.

I have two tomahawks. They're mostly for my meager collection, but I do use them occasionally for throwing. I've received some training on how to use one as a weapon, but I easily have firearms, other edged weapons, chemical agents, and blunt weapons within reach.

My hawks are multi tools, mostly chopping stuff as per usual, no not as good as an axe but lighter to carry around, I've got three and whille only I could fight with all of them one is better with length head weight and materials and all for more of a fighting hawk, yea gotta use the right tool for the job but yea also have to be able to use the tools yea got on hand...oh and to anwer the questions because they are fun to use, cutting, hacking, chopping, wacking, pulling, smacking fun!!!!

I have the CS trail hawk. I use it purly for defensive purposes. It rides in my car under the passenger seat. handle out. Its also an impact weapon. U can choose to kill, or just brake sum bones to get away. Im never gonna be a victim, Never gonna go with out a fight. I follow the law so really i dont have to worry to much about getting questioned about it. I keep it alittle dirty, with dry mud, and i also keep sum wood chips in my van so i can say i use it for wood. Wich i also do..... The tomahawk is just COOL.

I think it is pretty "sporting" any time that you give your enemy a chance to hold your weapon for a while.

That's just awesome.

To be honest, just for the cool factor. I just like the way they look.

I use mine almost exclusively as a tool. I don't have much shrubery around my house, lots more woody trees and such, a machete just doesn't do it. It also works well for demolition, I cut up an 8' square hot tub with mine to fit it in the truck bed to haul off. Didn't have a recip saw available, so the hawk and a 2lb drilling hammer made very short work of it.
