Knives allow us to manipulate our environments, as do flashlights, multitools and guns. Each provides a small sense of security in an insecure world, and that is why we often see that a knife guy is also into lights, MTs, etc. We like to be prepared for the unknown, to save the day, to protect ourselves and our clan, and simply to add a little convenience to our lives.

There is also a psychological component for many of us, wherein knives, etc., provide a brief distraction from the trainwrecks between our ears. That's why I own 100+ knives, and many dozens of MTs, lights, etc. There is no rational basis for this hoarding, but it results from repeated attempts to make ourselves feel good. The hunt, the web searching, the purchase, the waiting, the opening, the fondling and using . . . these things distract us from our inner demons for a short while. When the narcotic effect wears off, we start looking for the next knife. And before you know it, you end up with dozens of them. Its an addiction in the purest sense.

I often go days without using my knives.
I collect and use simply because I like them.
The fit and finish is a big thing for me.
I have an appreciation for detail. Alot of work goes into tight tolerances.
Using my knives is just a bonus.

The best memories of my childhood were spent outdoors. Capable tools were a big part of that. Cleaning fish, jimmy rigging things to make them work, and being useful. Knives were a big part of that. So were flashlights but...These forums are more diverse and interesting.

They are useful tools that are easy to carry. I also appreciate fine craftsmanship and attention to detail, so I choose my knives carefully. It is nice to know you have it when you need it!

Yeah that . Knives are such a simple tool , yet a well designed one can be so vastly different to use than a poorly designed one . But there's nothing like finding one that you just know you will never part with .

HOLD MY BEER AND WATCH THIS ! :emot-yarr:

Man jewelry. Knives, watches, guns. Men don't buy shoes, jewelry, clothes. We buy knives, watches, guns, flashlights.

think of it this way;
a marvel to behold,
a delight in use,
an obsession to own.
and at last,
a near symbiotic merger
which has manifested
into as a peculiar physical extension of the personality.
which show signs of becoming akin
to the likes of an obsessive-compulsive disorder.
meaning your mind thinks it can only be happy
when buying and having knives around all the time.

Genetics? :D
Aesthetics, the materials and designs.
Appreciation of the craftsmanship and artistry.

All of the critters on this big blue marble have knives of one sort or another. I just like to even the odds in my favor. My nails are about as far from knives as can be.

To me, knives are symbols of adventure, preparedness, and independance. Knowing I have one (or two) on my person makes me feel better prepared for what the world may throw my direction. I have to agree with Powernoodle also, in that they distract me from other, unpleasant realities of life. I enjoy browsing the web for interesting knives, looking for the next the next one that catches my interest, and the anticipation that goes along with the purchase and wait. It's a feeling very akin to what I felt as a kid waiting for Christmas day to arrive!

There is also the sense of pride in ownership that goes along with owning something nice. Some of my blades are basically "functional art" to me, others are just tools. In the end, though, this is my hobby, and just like with any other hobby, I do it because I enjoy it.

It s nice to have a tool handy that allows one to deal with various issues one encounters. How one values the differences in quality and useability of the tool is an individual matter.

They make life easier on a daily basis. Still I could suffice with a 15 dollar SAK, day to day. Beyond that it's really aesthetics, and maybe the different variations and nuances that keep me obtaining them.

Boys don't grow, up; their toys just become more expensive.
I've always liked knives. I think my uncle bought me my first Leatherman Wave. Then for a while I was in school and didn't have extra cash, but recently I started buying. So why do I like them? I think its because of the sense of independence, and preparedness. I've spent hikes/day trips wishing I had spent a little extra cash on the proper gear, so I try my hardest to gear up properly. I think thats why gear-guys like all kinds of gear. It's a general awareness of what could happen when you're unprepared.

I've asked myself this same question for a long time..really don't know why, but I sure enjoy them :).

I love the variety of knives. I have from simple openers to switchblades and balisongs. There are so many kinds of them, I love it. i also love how there are so many everyday uses for them. I carry one on me wherever I go, and there are uses everywhere. They are very handy.

Have and will always like knives.

They serve so many purposes from entertainment, food prep and even defense if necessary.

They have allowed man to manipulate his environment since recorded history (and before), so they are part of our genetic code by now.

They are cool, functional and give me a lot of enjoyment.

What's not to like?
