Why do you like knifes ?

As humanoids we've been using a cutting tool for 3.4 million years (Tool Use by Early Humans Started Much Earlier)! So, you could say it's in our DNA.

Back in 2005 Forbes conducted a survey of the Top 20 Most Important Tools of All Time and the knife came out on top. Additionally, of the top 20 tools 5 more are a related tool: chisel, lathe, saw, scythe and sword.

An excellent question! As quite a few people have pointed out I also could easily manage in my life with a single, fairly inexpensive pocket knife, but instead I continually buy knives until I have more than I can use and then buy another. For me part of it is that I have always had kind of an artistic appreciation of knives. High quality folding knives are simple and elegant, are precisely and interestingly engineered with various locking mechanisms, and use really excellent materials in their construction. I do not often use the knives that I own, but I sure like having them!

I always loved knives and as a kid would while away the hours sharpening my Solinger fixed blade. In fact, before it was a science of angles and bevels friends and I could sharpen a blade better at 11 and 12 than I can now.

Knives allow us to manipulate our environments, as do flashlights, multitools and guns. Each provides a small sense of security in an insecure world, and that is why we often see that a knife guy is also into lights, MTs, etc. We like to be prepared for the unknown, to save the day, to protect ourselves and our clan, and simply to add a little convenience to our lives.

There is also a psychological component for many of us, wherein knives, etc., provide a brief distraction from the trainwrecks between our ears. That's why I own 100+ knives, and many dozens of MTs, lights, etc. There is no rational basis for this hoarding, but it results from repeated attempts to make ourselves feel good. The hunt, the web searching, the purchase, the waiting, the opening, the fondling and using . . . these things distract us from our inner demons for a short while. When the narcotic effect wears off, we start looking for the next knife. And before you know it, you end up with dozens of them. Its an addiction in the purest sense.
Couldn't have put it better myself, Bravo! :)

Exactly! Knives are just as unique as the individuals that carry them. We all could theoretically have the same collection but use it differently. I live in a suburb and EDC a BK2 on my hip every day and people just don't understand how important it is to carry tools with them now-a-days. I don't mind being "that guy" around here because I know there are thousands more like me. :)

Weapons were not as durable as they are today.
Knapped spearheads, flint knife, spear shafts, cordage,clothing... all needed constant attention.... Our Ancestors that kept such equipment in shape survived better though hunting and defense, and exposure then those who didnt.
Those who discovered or sought out new tools, methods or techniques survived even better.

at least half a million years of selective breeding, man vs nature some things became instinct.

The need to pull that knife out of the draw and inspect it.. feel its heft in your hand... try to give it that slightly better edge then you have ever managed before.

Its the call of our ancestors, its in our blood a lesson taught by those who managed to avoid the best teacher of all, death.

At the end of the day, we are all just little boys playing with our toys, and you know what, thats exactly how its supposed to be.
