why do we get so caught up with different steels, and exotic materials? It's a tool just like a hammer or wrench. Made to do a very specific type of job. what makes them so special? And why do we like them so much?

Hmmmmmmmmm...something feels familiar... this threads been done before..? Well who cares knife talk ftw! I love knives cause they're a really cool hobby and they're really fun to use something seems primal about them. Besides to me its a better hobby than something like stamp collecting

Not to mention a shopping addiction. :D

Because they're so useful. It's just like any other hobby. Something inside drives me to read about them, buy them, use them, compare them, and find the best ones for my needs.

They look pretty. Much prettier than a hammer or file. :D It's fun to cut and chop (cause destruction with a sharp tool).

Made to do a very specific type of job.
Don't you know that's among the last thing knife nuts do with their knives? :p Most reviews I have seen about knives has been focused on how well they can do chopping and splitting wood. Maybe it's just that I prefer reviews of big knives. ;)

Because they're cooler than stamps.

In all seriousness though, what this guy said:

They have "character".

Man's oldest tool and second oldest weapon.

Also, to expound on an earlier post about them having "power", I think it's (with me at least) a feeling of INDEPENDENCE. With a good knife and some skills, I can make a fire, make a shelter, defend my life (if the Glock is not available) and create about any improvised tool, etc.

I like em because theyre mans second oldest tool (i believe the hammer=rock was first :D) Also for the art aspect...I love that a smith can take a chunk of old steel wagon wheel belting and make a straight razor out of it thats capable of shaving hair. And some of the makers here are right on par with any other artist out there in the world. Making knives combines drawing, sculpting, welding, leatherwork and it has to fit together and not look like a pile of garbage in the end...and be functional (non functional "art knives" are a waste of good steel to me)

I love hunting and the great outdoors but to indulge in these pastimes one must have a good sharp knife and I'm not the type to settle for second best quality items especialy when it comes to my tools used to enjoy my leisure time.

It all started from here:

Let's see... Jesus or Darwin ?

I think I'm going with Darwin on this one. ;)

Because (for the most part) they are cheaper than guns and I don't play video games anymore. If I had the money I'd be doing the same thing with guns.

It is a ton of fun to take the hundred or so bucks I used to spend on video games every few months and spend it on a knife or two. It's not a huge hit to the wallet like purchasing a gun is. I can also get most of them second day shipping free off the internet instead of driving out to a gun store (45 minutes away here in occupied territory) and then waiting for the background check etc.
