why do you like knives so much?

i was going to start a thread entitled "why knives? why not hammers?" but this one's adequate. :D

I like them for the craftsmanship, design, history and usefullness. Besides, all the males in my family carried knives as far back as my Great Great Grand Pappy. And, if the SHTF, I have a ton of bartering goods.

one time, i tried to tear thru a peice of plastic clam shell holding food inside and it turned out ripping a peice of skin off, thats why!

Design, blade-steel, utility, handle materials, lock...which all adds up to art, craftsmanship, aesthetics.

Primal, manly, everyday usefulness...just think how easy it is to slice plastic instead of trying to pull apart with your fingers. I'm always puzzled when I see a grown man trying to cut open a box using a key.

why do we get so caught up with different steels, and exotic materials? It's a tool just like a hammer or wrench. Made to do a very specific type of job. what makes them so special? And why do we like them so much?

Because I happen to like it and I don't feel the need to psychoanalyze it or explain it to anyone else.

Of all tools knives are the most functional and beautiful of all and perhaps the oldest.

I really can't explain why I like knives, hawks etc., any more than I can explain why I like a certain shaped caboose on an athletic 24 year old red head chick. It's primal.

I like tools just as much as any other guy, but a hammer and wrench won't carve wood.

And batoning a wrench is a lot of work. Should I carry a 4 inch, or 6-7 inch combination, or a torque wrench in the bush to measure wood density ?........ hard call. Then there's the ratcheting box end wrench for fire starting with a bow drill...................

Why do I like knives? Believe it or not, I don't get asked that very much.

Easy question to answer, though.

Knives are man's oldest tool. The one from which all others were derived. We have what we have as a society, because of knives.

From the first sharpened rock, to the most modern hyper alloy out there, man was born of the blade.
