why do you like knives

I first got into knives when my friend got a CRKT M16, and I just had to have one. Well, then I found another I had to have, and another, and another. I love knives because they are just so wonderfully crafted and are about the coolest thing you can collect.

Whether 6 thousand, 6 million, or some other number of years, I can safely say it was a little before our time.

We agree on the premise that knives have been used universally since Mankind's earliest days, and that is the important point. Scientists and theologians can debate the exact number, but, on a practical level, the numbers mean the same thing. Sometimes quantification only obscures the message.

Not only do all of us owe our survival to knives, but so did all of our ancesters irrespective of where or when they came from, and even the most squeemish Sheeple out there today still uses a knife every day of their life.

I like knives because they scare the crap outta people!

Not really.
Probably because my Dad always had knives around.
And they are handy for cutting things too!

The real question is "how can someone NOT like knives"?

Because as many have said: it is basic and simple, yet complex in the nuances ..

Because, philosophically, the question should be : whey are knives sharp?

Because I agree that they are toys for the grown ups (and kids with proper training

)
That is why (GigOne) we are like kids explaining why they like to play with water

Because (Swede79) knives save life and jewelry invites robbers

Because (allenC) how come someone doesn't need knife?

And thanks to third world crappy QC, those pre- things doesn't always come through so that I have excuse to keep my balisongs with me. I have to cut open some plastic bags that are supposedly hand-torn-able (is there such word?

), punch through those mineral water cup to drink because the plastic straw just won't do it and is now bent FUBAR

Finally, it relaxes me when the edge is touch and the sharpness bites the skin. Ouch!!

Functionality, shape... why do we like Knives? read all reasons aforementioned, I think we all share most of them.

I would have to echo many of the reasons given above.
I would like to add that I truly enjoy the tactile stimulation I receive when putting a knife to work. I am a junior(read beginner) whittler, and love the way a sharp blade glides through whatever particular piece I am working on.
What can I say, I'm a man and I love my toys.

My Wife takes my Sebenza out of my pocket, closing her eyes, she gently brushes it across her cheek and along her jaw line... she loves me. She's making fun of me, but she loves me and she enjoys it.

Personally, I'm attracted to a lot of mechanical metal things. I don't smoke, but I really dig Zippos. I like guns, but I don't NEED one enough to buy.

I like my Sebenza because it is perfect. It is made of great materials, and the fit and finish is immaculate. I can roll it around in my hand when I'm thinking or reading. It's uses pop up and I take it out with pride.

Well it started off as a 'steel' interest what had what in it, how it worked and why. Then I saw the utility use of carrying a knife. Then I began to see the differences in knives and appeciate how slight differences could mean a lot. I found I could sharpen 99% of blades better than a factory and at that point I was not afraid to use my blades. Then I bought my first Spyderco, then Benchmade, then eventually a Sebenza. My collection goes in different directions all the time.

I like them as they are usefull, potentialy life saving and they make me feel good.
