I have a few of their knives and their good knives. I use my vaquero grande and it cuts like nobody's business. The other knives are just as good and not bad for the money. Some are over priced and not worth the money but the ones around 80 bucks and under are really good knives. So someone wanna tell me what the reason is hwy everyone hates cold steel?

Gee Red,I don't think anyone really hates them.I know I like a few of their patterns better than others but as a Whole they have good quality knives.YMMV.tom.

I don't mean for the message to sound angry. I was just wondering cause when i see a post involving them people always seem to not like the knives. Or maybe its just the company?

I don't hate Cold Steel...In-fact, my favorite fixed-blade is my Cold Steel 6 inch "new-style" Tanto...That knife ROCKS!.:).

Most people agree that Cold Steel sells plenty of great knives at a good price. The Voyager, Trailmaster, and SRK are big favorites around here. A lot of people just dont seem to like the company and their method of advertising, which is a colorful method to say the least. Some people let this affect their opinions of their knives, but most people appreciate at least a few of their models. I wouldnt really say that they are hated, but just compared to the kind of service Spyderco and Benchmade offers, they really arent up to par.

Oh i get it. Yea they do have a "creative" way of advertising. I personally think its pretty cool

It is nice to see the knife you want to buy truly abused and put into action, so you have an idea of what it can withstand. But 2-3 hours of destroying car hoods and ropes is just too much for anyone :)

Cold Steel doesn't make knives,That bothers some people. They make a lot of claims about how their knives are the best, when there own knives are made for them by other cultery companies. They copy designs from custom makers and production companies. They have shifted much of their production to lower end steels, which is something they bragged that they would never do a few years ago.
All that being said, they make some very good knives. I think their factory seconds are very good deals. They also make some crap. My personal opinion is that their are better places for me to spend money than with Cold Steel.

Not everyone hates Cold Steel. I like the Cold Steel knives that I own, have had no problems with any of mine, and believe mine are worth what I paid for them. You'll get varied opinions on knives here, so take 'em with a grain of salt

The reason I am not to crazy about Cold steel is cuz I think the over hype there blades way to much. Something about that turns me off from any company I belive that the custumers are your best advertisment. And there blades are ok but nothing spectacular. And I personaly think that if other knife companys started making videos like Cold Steel then CS would lose lots of biz cuz they act like there knives are the only ones that can do those things. But if other co. started then it would show that they are not the only ones. But those videos costed alot to make and most other manufacturers use there money for more important things. I do think that CS makes a few good knives for the money but I am not about to buy anything from them. I'd rather spend my $ on a SR or a Ranger or Becker. Sorry for being kinda long winded,

I like cold steel, I just don't like cold steel as much as benchmade, crkt, kershaw and spyderco. They have some rather expensive stuff for AUS8 or 440C use...but of course, you can't judge a knife by steel alone, so they might very well be worth it. But when a native costs maybe 65 dolla and has S30V and is from Spyderco....

I do find their videos entertaining, I've watched one all the way through. But it does sort of take on a side show kind of feel....at the same time I like it, but people hacking away at stuff for 30 minutes sort of reminds me of those old knife infomercials.

It seems like they ripped off the AXIS lock also....but...that might just be me....and the arc angel, though cool, cost significantly more than a benchmade 42...it even costs more than a 41 in D2....I mean...sheesh...

But it does look cool!

If I could try some of them, I might be more interested in them. They're pretty cool.

Did Cold Steel ever make an unmarked knife? There is a huge bowie style knife at the shop that looks exactly like a Cold Steel, right down to the handle material and style, but it is unmarked.

I tried to argue the price down based on this, but was unsuccessful :(

It might be the "trailmaster" model.

Gerber had an axis lock before a lot of companies. At least i think it was an axis lock. I can't think of the model but i have one. It has a ring in the handle to put your finger through. Satin finish blade and zytel handle

Cold Steel makes pretty good first knives. Just like as I remember my first
car from High School was a good car. But as I grew up a bit I realized that
there were alot of better cars out there and then I went and bought a new
one.

Does that make my first car "bad" no of course not, it's just that there are
better ones out there if one looks.

Close, it was called a bolt-action lock. I think the ones with the big hole in the handle came out after the axis, but the bolt-action lock was used on another Gerber based on the larger LST style knives, it was simply called a bolt-action. The also had another model with the lock called the parabellum (sp?). I also think Meyerco tried to bring back the bolt-action for a while. Pretty sure it was a Blackie Collins design.

The axis is a different design, but sure seems inspired by the bolt-action.

Can you prove that? Everyone loves to say, wink, wink, that Camillus and others make knives for CS, but I've never seen a shred of proof.

I seem to recall a number of years ago that they had to temporarily suspend making the Trailmaster because a bunch of their senior smiths walked off the job due to some dispute.

Doesn't Spyderco have knives made for them too? Unless it's marked Golden, CO it really wasn't made by Spyderco but for them?

i think the issue with Cold Steel is that they have moved away from making good quality blades to turning as much a profit as possible. For example, they've moved away from using good steels (back in the day) on their knives to almost exclusively 420J or Carbon V on their general production knives.

That's the issue I have with them. If i pay $60 for a knife, I expect at least 440C, or maybe even settle for Buck's 420HC. But NOT 420J. The same goes with their $100-200 folders; in that price range, other companies offer M2, D2, 154 CM, ATS-34, S30V, VG-10; cold steel offers San Mai III or Aus-8A.

The one with the hole in the handle was the Chameleon.
