Why does everyone wanna use Bleach?

I am confused. In various water disinfecting info sites, we are told that chlorine or clorox will not kill viruses, but iodine will. If the chlorine will not kill viruses, why do hospitals use it??? Most of the posts in this thread specifically stated fear of HIV, various hepatitus types and other viruses more than bacterial infections.

Another thought. There was a study on bacteria disinfecting, more aimed at a kitchen or restaurant setting. It showed that using vinegar and hydrogen peroxide, first one and then the other, was just as effective as clorox on counters and such. I am not sure if putting acidic vinegar on the steel would be any less bad than clorox.

hydrogen peroxide kills a number of molds . I dont know about hiv , hep a,b,c. Lysol may be another choice . If I had to worry of hiv hep or any of that sort on a blade i clean it well in hot water maybe with lysol then dry it for several days befor even going near it . Or simply toss it in the trash . Or what i said at first pressure cooker is the best way . you can even keep the knife steril by putting it in a air tight bag while pressure cooking it. That way it would be steril when you needed a steril knife. I also understand that erts may need to use a knife to rescue or save people from death or whatever, In that case I would have a tool of all metal that could be cleaned in boiling water or presuure cooker. Wash the blood and guts off first of corse. Sorry bleach still dont pop in my mind for cleaning a knife made with steel. Oh the air tight bags need to be made for a pressure cooker or auto clave! regular sandwish bags wont cut it !
