Why does my 220 stone cut so much faster than the 120 on the edge pro?

My 120 grit stone (the grey one) cuts faster than my 220 grit, but both are extremely slow compared to my DMT XX Coarse. I am used to being able to put lots of pressure on the blade while I hog off steel with the XX Coarse, and I think part of the reason the Edge Pro is so much slower than I am used to is the fact I can't put nearly as much pressure on the blade. I did order the DMT X Coarse Edge Pro stone though, I think it will be much faster than the Edge Pro stones and will save me from having to have multiple 120 and 220 grit stones at the ready as I wear right through those stones as I try to rebevel S90V, M4, ZDP 189, and the other very wear resistant steels I have on most of my blades.

I've found that diamond hones work best with steels like S30V, CPM154, VG-10 and D2, probably something to do with the carbides and the vanadium content.

3M - 77 is the contact adhesive that probably works the best. It's what I use, and I've never had any problems whatsoever. I've used (I'm not sure of the maker) 357 with good results too. 3M makes another spray that is 90-something that isn't recommended because it's too strong and hard to remove. I haven't tried to remove the 357, so can't say it's easily removable. I think Ben uses 77. It's strong until it gets hot (like 200*F),which makes removal easy.

Singularity 35, I'm sorry and surprised about your experience. That blows me away. I've had good success with the 120s, but I went to 2"x6" DMTs, and never looked back. I've never had any trouble with an EP stone, but there are better stones easily available now. Kinda pricey, but definitely worth it IMHO. I use XC and F DMTs, and Choseras and Shaptons now. Tom @ Jende Ind. (http://www.jendeindustries.com/mm5/merchant.mvc) is super great to work with for me. He may send you over to Ken Schwartz, who is also a great guy, and the one who actually does the stone cutting. I'll tell you right up front not to expect speediest delivery. Ken is super busy.

Thanks GG, I did buy an XC DMT 2X6 inches from Tom Blodgett already. Now that thing removes metal fast. I just use that for reprofiling and setting the bevel.

how thick are those stones ? are they much thicker than stock stones ? i'd like to get a full set of dmts ... EP diamond stones are nice but 400 is the coarsest available, i want faster :D

A bit thicker, I'll post pics later.

thanks i'd love some pics mounted on the EP too, to get an idea how the wider stones work on the machine. i'm affraid you lose visual control of what you do at the tip for exemple.

Some pics of the DMT XC for the EP compared to the EP 120 grit stone.

I have the blue colored 120 and cuts great. I also added my DMT to aluminum flat stock to use on the Edge Pro. Slightly thicker then the Edge Pro stones. Used double sided tape and is holding up well.

I got my EP a few months ago and the 120 stone didn't do much after the first few trips down the first knife. I popped the stone off and tossed it in the trash. Kept the block to mount sand paper on.
