Why does the camel die?

To answer the op, don't worry. There is no shortage of camels or the bones within. They are in no way threatened or endangered and are infact a pest in several countries.

Use all the camel bones you want!

One thing that many don't know is that we had feral camels in the US. When I was little there were still reports of an occasional sif=ghting, but the last official camel died in the late 1040's. They were tried out by the army in the mid 1800's and when they were found to be very ornery and vicious, they were turned out into the desert to fend for themselves. They had a reasonable population for a while, but they were not protected ... and were tasty ... and reduced to a population that could not sustain. The Civil war supposedly ended many herds (presumably for meat), and others throughout the southwest were rounded up in the late 1870's and sold for meat and curiosities.

Gen Beale who started the famous nearby Tejon ranch bought many of them after the army disbanded the camel corps. Many lived out there days here in the mountains of Kern Co, California. I've got a pic of a couple being loaded up in downtown LA. I've spoken to old timers now passed that had seen them running loose on the Tejon.

Thanks everyone! I made some calls to my wood suppliers and found that most of it (walnut, maple, and ironwood) is from dead trees, or trees that are removed for houses, roads, construction, etc.

Where are folks buying their camel bone stock??
I bought a bunch of mine from a vendor at the PKA show in Denver over a couple of years. I can't remember who it was, he was out of cards. I hand picked every set I bought because they were quite variable in size, thickness, and color. I don't know that I would order them online. I'm hoping to find more at blade show.

They're talking about cloning mammoths for real now. Maybe that'll open up ivory again. I used to raise, goats, how hard could mammoths be? :D

Forget cloning the entire mammoth. Just clone its ivory & grow that in a giant test tube or petri dish.

No steaks that way. Or childrens rides. We gotta monetize the whole animal.

I get mine from Culpepper. Plain white flat stock., no radius on top. Ordered some yesterday.
