Why does TV suck nowadays?

As always, late for a thread, but I kinda like FX's "Rescue Me" and "Nip/Tuck".

Both are a bit grittier than what you'd find on network tv. "Nip/Tuck" requires the watcher to exercise his suspension of disbelief a bit more than some, but it's entertaining. Always liked Dennis Leary in movies, and his "Rescue Me" is very good.

Actually this year has been a better year for TV. The last few years have really sucked.

For me:
Mon: Los Vegas
Tues: nothing
Weds: Lost and also record Smallville on the DVR
Thurs: CSI Vegas
Fri: watch Smallvile from Weds.
Weekend: We usually look thru the guide during the week to find a movie and save it on the DVR so we can watch it on the weekends. We usually have more movies saved than we can watch.

I am totaly hooked on the DVR.

tv sucks nowadays because most of it is about trigger happy guys and sex sex sex. no more thinking like macgyver episodes.

I don't turn on the television unless there's something on that I really want to watch. Background noise sucks.

NYPD Blue, Futurama, and Deep Space Nine were my favorite shows, all canceled. But they might reruns on some cable channels.

I do watch CSI sometimes, and Without a Trace doesn't completely suck. The FOX cartoons on Sunday make me laugh somethimes - The Simpsons, King of the Hill.

NOVA on PBS has the best science programs on television. The Discovery Channel and The Learning Channel have switched almost entirely to decorating shows, whether decorating home interiors or motorcycles...

I like CSI. House. Bones. SVU and CI. Not much else worth seeing on TV usually. Sometimes something interesting is on discovery or history channel but not often, sometimes the science channel or the military channel will catch my eye with something unusual. Too much TV makes you fat anyway. :)

Law and Order CI is one of the best American programs right now.

The BBC has a few good shows like SPOOKS and HUSTLE

Not much to keep me interested anymore.
Sunday: ESPN2 Hunt Sunday (especially get wild with Cindy Garrison), Football x 3 games
Monday: Monday Night Football
Tues: Nada
Wed: Nada
Thurs: ER only when new
Fri: Nada
Sat: Nada (well, if the wife ain't around... Sabado Caliente or whatever it is called, on one of the Spanish stations. Nothing like scantily clad sweet young thangs shakin' it to music)

If I get the bug to watch TV on a Nada day, it's usually History channel or Discovery.

Sabado Gigante. I like that show too; and, for the same reasons you do, Mongo. ;)

I can't believe none of you guys mentioned 24.
Worth watching

Battlestar Galactica – the new one

NCIS- it's ok

Lost

Monk

Weird Twighlight Zone moment. Almost exactly a year since this thread was started. I had a freaky encounter with my post from last year, which I have no recollection of writing...although two of my favorites are discontinued

Still like Lost, and ER, as well as picking up My name is Earl, and How I met Your Mother. I also had the fortune of finding reruns of Firefly.

Not much else worth watching...

See my signature line. . .:D

I can handle only small doses of TV, although I have no problem watching a film. The thing I hate is commercials. I would rather watch no TV for eternity than sit through 5 minutes of commercials.

I do not watch commercials, I will flip to a different channel or turn off the TV. I cant stand any prime time shows- any of them! Ugh! Such crap.

They say that the more channels there are, the worse they become.
Boy, is that true. I was watching TV last night and thought I'd check out a nature show. This particular show was about this idiot who was for some reason trying to see how close he could approach a pride of lions on foot without triggering an attack. After endless minutes of walking around, scared but trying to act cool, the guy was starting to bore me, so I switched to another channel. 10 minutes later, I came back, and now he was doing the same thing, but trying to achieve a closer approach. I figured the guy was suicidal and would just keep it up until he reached the distance that would get him eaten. Click off, come back 10 minutes later, "...now if I can just reach this goal I will be happy..." the idiot's still walking towards lions. I made up my mind that he was retarded, and so was the network that would put such an excruciatingly boring show on TV. Somebody put on the Yule Log channel.

Watch Porn! It never will get canceled and you always know how the show is going to end. Its the best T.V. out there..:D

seriously..I am so sick of reality shows I could hurl...and Design shows..with metro sexual men designing rooms for $50,000 for two gay men..its enough to make me puke..then there is the Animal rights Planet channel which preaches a subliminal animal rights agenda by teaching our kids that animals are four legged humans...

and TNT...or the Law and Order station...

Ill stick with the laptop and the internet.

I have found even 'good' TV, like History Channel, Discovery, NatGeo and Animal Planet are Time Vampires. The return is minimal twixt the knowledge gained and the time I could have used doing something 'real' (like spending time on a computer forum). .............................
:D

History, Discovery and the like are owned by the regular socialist networks and are their way of introducing you to rewritten history and the socialist POV in a slightly different, less alarming manner.
Not even going to get into PBS.:jerkit:(puke):thumbdn:

Most of the TV selection I see comes from commercials during football season. Booth sportscasting is on the same level as being a parade announcer in my book. I'd be more entertained by a monkey doing the commentary - at least the poo they fling is more than psychological.

What really grinds my gears is when networks pump their TV shows as being "critically acclaimed" and "highest rated".

Does anyone realize that most of these "acclaims" come from media sources that are owned by the same network that is airing the TV show? :jerkit: Example: when do you ever see an ABC-owned company giving ratings to a CBS show?

I'd also like to find a book that hasn't made the NY Times bestsellers list. Do any of these actually exist, or is it something that just automatically gets printed on the cover?

I only have broadcast tv. But, Many of the shows that I liked were cancelled. Hawaii, Boomtown both stick out in my mind. At work, in the Breakroom, we have RFD, which has great horse programming. Which I then apply to a horse, outside.

One of the trends that I cannot stand lately is how skateboarding has turned into a spectator sport; when I was skating, there was no tv to watch. We just skated, and enjoyed ourselves. Now, all the skaters do the same tricks, use the same lines, and there is no individuality anymore.

With precious few exceptions, TV has always sucked.
It's Least Common Denominator entertainment for people with limited education/interests/attention spans. As with Government, we get the entertainment we deserve.
