Why don't I like folders?

I only had folders until recently when I was on a fixed blade kick. I now have 3 fixed blades but only really use one, they just aren't handy since I can't carry them easily like folders. I don't camp or hike so that is the main reason. Folders are just more convenient, save maybe an Izula(which I own and gets the most use)

That is quite beautiful and I think I might get one. I think I might be cured!

Rob the SR-1s are very nice and a great value for the price imo. My regular SR-1 with Sliepner steel is a bit smoother opening than the SR-1D but I havn't carried the damascus blade near as much.

Thanks for the recommendation my friend I will heed your advice. I very much like the plain blade as well. It is decided. This will be my first folder!

for me its a faze thing.. while back I carried a fixed blade all the time either neck, hip, or pocket...

now its been about 8 months I haven't carried one, yes I still love a fixed knife I just don't carry it...

but I have about 5 folders in a random rotation and love it...

I have an itch to start carrying one of my necker's though.... :D

I am a knife-slut. I love folders... I love fixed blades! I cannot imagine having just one type.

If your life is not lacking without folders, I would not question things much.

OTOH if you have not tried a good one, you might not know what you are missing.

If you spend most of your time in a large city, or an office building, then I'd suggest that the nod goes to the folder. Seriously, how many of us are comfortable with a Buck 119 strapped to our mid-section as we fly off to work? I am a hard core, addicted lover of fixed blades, and yes, they work on another level than folders...naturally! Funny how the NMFBM remains in the trunk of the car when I make a pit stop to the local five-n-dime. Ever carried a fixed blade only to have the thing ride up on you when you take a seat? Does a plumber use a wrench that only opens up to 6/8th of an inch when he needs one that will fit a two inch pipe? I know it is a stretch, but I doubt most plumbers carry anything more than a mini slip-joint or perhaps a box cutter. The FB idea gets funny and even hilarious when some nimrod shows up at the deer camp with a foot long 440C Buck Buster. Ever been there? The folder gets used, carried, used again and rides practically invisible to both the user and the idiots who are afraid of a big sheath knife. A folder makes sense for 99% of our slicing and cutting needs.

A few others have commented here that they get by with a folder for the lion's share of the chores at hand. One even said that he'd never used anything more than a three inch folding blade for all his wilderness chores. He would be a memember of that well skilled, practical fraternity that knows how to utilize the right tool for the right job.

I have a lot of both FB and folders. Almost all of my FB are small ( under 4 in.) and I regularly carry one in either a pocket sheath or as a necker. In reality, my most regular EDC is a 2.5-3.5 folder in my back pocket, and a FB necker, or I change up and carry the folder in my right front pocket and the FB in a pocket sheath in the back pocket. There are some jobs the folder is "right" for, and others the FB gets used. I like'em both! I don't think I could "do" one or the other solely.

Growing up I was huge into fixed blades. Like you folders just did not appeal to me. I actually stopped carrying a blade for several years but once I got back into it I started to collect folders. They do everything I need, and although I still like the heft of a good fixed blade they just are not that useful for me in terms of function. The only time I really appreciate a fixed blade is when im camping on a sandy beach. I find sand really messes with folders and certainly prefer a fixed blade. When camping in the woods or standard hiking I find a folder does all I need. Food prep etc is all fine with a folder: in fact a folder is preferred for me.

Bottom line, I still like fixed blades and still use them on occassion but my heart will stay with folders. They are my true daily companions :)

In my youth, I had a couple of folders (scout-style Imperial and Holley Wharncliffe Whittler) and a number of fixed blades (USMC bolo knife, Western[?] leather handled sheath knife, and something else).

Carried the bolo when we camped, carried the Western when we hiked.

Carried the folders at school (hey, you couldn't really expect to carry a sheath knife at school).

It would be another twenty-odd years before I would buy another folder (a small "gent's" knife), and only then because of a career change that had me wearing slacks and sleeves. But over that same twenty years I would pick up another eight or ten fixed blades of one kind or another.

Fixed blades just seemed to be more practical for most of the stuff I needed.

For various reasons, my interest in folding knives got rekindled (in a mild way) about seven years ago (and by now, I'm already over 50), and I found myself fascinated by the newer assisted openers. I added a Leek to my stable, along with a Leatherman Supertool. Still, folders were just something I carried because, well, I'm not dressed without a knife, and the geek world I work in won't abide a blade in leather on my hip.

About four or five years ago, a guy named Steve managed to flip a lever in my thinking, and suddenly -- for the first time in my life -- I owned more folders than fixed blades, most of them classic patterns and slipjoints.

So, careful, it can happen to you really fast.

You may not see it coming.

I would love to carry my Razel and Bob Dozier more, but here in Kali you can get a felony bust for covering your belt sheath with a
jacket or vest. Kinda takes the fun out of it...

If I could carry FB's without issues in my area I wouldn't even own a folder and it's illegal in my area to conceal any FB. ;)

But since I can't I have to carry folders except when I go into the field and they stay home in favor of FB's.

Same here. Some non-knife people/bystanders (can't think of a friendly term for those) make things more difficult than they need to be.

I feel like there is something wrong with me because nothing about folders is appealing to me. I know some of you are going to call this blasphemy and for those of you that keep folders close to your heart allow me to apologize in advance. I have been a steady collector (and user) for a little while and I have nothing but fixed blades and ONE leatherman tti which I feel is the only folding multitool I will ever need. Does anybody else feel this way or am I all alone here? Perhaps I just need some folder porn therapy...

you're not alone.

in folders, i own a Leatherman Wave and that's it. i might have a vic SAK somewhere in the house, but i can't find it.

the rest of my knives are all fixed blades. i flat out just do not like folders.

i confess, i have a Boker Wharncliffe folder on it's way too me, but that was a prize in a competition, not a purchase.
