Why dont we make SS damascus?

The technical reason given for 300 series Stainless Steel's resistance to oxidation is that it rapidly forms a thin (monomolecular layer) of oxide on the surface that is not thick enough to affect appearance but is thick enough to impede further oxidation. Apparently even mirror finished stainless has the oxide film present.

This oxide film impedes proper welding, I am told, and that is why sucessful stainless forge welding requires a sealed enviroment (canister or foil) or an inert gas environment.

Maybe 400 series without nickle in it behaves differently.

Having worked for Devin I find it much easier to just get my SS damascus stock from him. It's just more cost effective.

Hello Ed, Art and Larrin Good to see you guys on here. We have a kitchen knife with stainless sides and a high carbon core. I know because the edge is always rusty and the sides are like new. That core cuts like crazy! Im just thinking ss damascus would look cool on a cutnshoot. I may need to buy it but would be giving up some "soul authorship". On the other hand who wants a gun/knife that has crappy welds if I do it myself. These learning curves are hurting my brain!
