Off Topic Why Facebook wont replace forums

We've had much better results with Instagram over Facebook. As a business that sells knives, we've found FB to be very anti knife. They simply won't allow ya to boost a post (where you pay to get your post to other folks ya haven't had contact with but have similar interests). So for instance even if we are having a sale on my wife's purses that she makes and we try to boost a post just talking about purses, no mention of knives, FB will deny it because on our website are those weapons of mass destruction for sale, knives, (kinda really funny if ya think that my average knife probably has a blade length of 2.5"). Also FB seems to have a much higher percentage of tire kickers. IG has worked very well for us. We have over 11,000 followers there. Post pics and like Butch says use a lot of hashtags Not just #knife and #knife for sale. Pretty soon ya'll build it up. Use decent pics too. Something you would like to look at. Show what you do. If ya want some examples click on the IG link in my sig line. If ya click there and then click on a pic ya can see the different hashtags. You can do this on your computer, don't need to be on a phone.

Yeah, I just worry about FB ruining IG for us since they own it. Started already with their stupid feed algorithm.

OK Ben so I had to have my then 17 year old daughter set up my IG account. Couple times a week I'd have her post pics. But then the world ended cause she moved out for college. She showed me how to post on the IG and all was good. But she set up my tablet to do this as I had and still have a flip phone that makes phone calls. I don't text and I have a camera. I take pics on the camera. Sort and resize on the puter, email them to myself and then download them onto my tablet to post onto IG. Occasionally I'll share them onto FB and my 22 year old daughter in law showed me how to do that. I, like Butch know what a pound sign is! See you feel like 20 cause you are 20! Bet nobody had to show you how to work all this stuff.

Does it annoy your daughter that her dad has more instagram followers than she does?

Nah I think she's over it! My IT crew at my son's wedding back in June.

There's a group on FB that I moderate, but don't "own".

I've got powers to delete and ban, but no authority to "set policy"

It's absolutely infested with spamers from China and India/Pakistan.

There's no end to the personal profiles with business names.
When reported, FB will only remove a fraction - even with glaring l y obvious evidence in the profile.

Next is the fake profiles, just trying to stealth their way in.

You can spend a few hours a day looking at profiles and banning, then do it all again the next day.

In my local hunting fishing groups, there are 3 fake profiles that sell poor Pakistan damascus sets as local handmade.

In knife groups, there are Pak scammers using stolen photos from well known makers offering to make that knife for you. They are so dense as to even offer it back to the makers themselves.

In a knife group, there was that guy who was a real American maker who stole a pic of Nick Wheeler's hamon and photochopped it to represent it as his own work.

Seeing all that, you really have to appreciate how well run BF is.

I saw Salem talking about an American guy whoused photos of his knives and was "Taking deposits" for it.

Well we'll make it happen. See if we can't find ya a burl or two too. My guess is with mountains and mountains of black oaks we can find ya something.

I just use Facebook to keep up with my large family and close friends. I have a knife Facebook account but honestly don't get really anything from it. I'm moving more into IG and really like it. Funny becaus I have looked around at other forums, not for selling just hanging out. It's hard to find blacksmithing/knifemaking forums with enough members to keep the forum active. That's one big thing I love about BF is there are new posts and comments very quickly. I do like the ABS forum as there is usaly very high quality topics going on. I have been lucky on the sales side of things. It seams like as soon as I feal like I'm caught up and I can just go into the shop and make what I want I get another few requests. Keeps me on my toes and out of my wife's hair.

Facebook lacks the fabulously marvellous Moderators that make Bladeforums the marvellously fabulous experience it is.
Entirely objective opinion, of course ;)
I'm starting to hate Facebook for their politics and self importance.
