Done properly, there should be no unsightly glue lines. The glue adds strength and creates a moisture barrier. It should be, imo, combined with mechanical fastening.
not every knife with glued on scales looks bad. it depends on who made the knife and how well the scales were dry fitted. sometimes it is difficult to get a good fit. natural materials can twist with temperature or humidity changes. with some scales like ivory or bone, glue is the only way to attach this type of scale because pins peened down tight enough to hold them in place would split the ivory or bone.
