Why Grind Bevels Many Times?

That's phenomenal... I need to get a wheel now. I'm impressed with their plunges and symmetry at that speed.

After reading this thread, I know one thing for sure.... I'm taking way too much time grinding my bevels.

I need to up my game!

lol, well it's always better to do it right than to do it fast if you aren't yet able to do them both. It's funny, I often spread out my work on a knife over quite a while, maybe working on 2-3 different ones during that length of time, so by the time I get around to starting a new knife I pretty much have to retrain myself to grind, which is a bit frustrating, but I'm usually not in a hurry so as long as I don't mess up I'm ok.

No need for irony .If you watched first video he make good statement before he start to grind .....some maker choose to grind slow and they make excellent knife , i choose to grind fast .
Symmetry and plunge have nothing with speed but with skill of knife maker .I doubt in my skills so I use jigs......on 8000 ft/m:D
I think that here we agree that you can grind in any way you want and feel comfortable .BUT you can t sell to me that story that grinding hardened steel with 320 grit belt is not much slower then with 40 grit. I inhaled too much grinding dust to get over that statement :D

I only use a 320 AO belt for some handle work: How long would this take with a 320 belt?

Me bout 8 hours but then I'm loosing a lot of time changing belts.

Yep I really appreciate this thread... Going to influence me to try some new things! It's great so see how you more experienced guys get though some steel!

Again you say that :) No my friend , IT IS slower...........a hundred times slower .How many days it will take you to grind ONE side of this blade with your AO 320 grit belt ? It is 7mm thick steel and about 4 inch blade ...I can grind that in TEN minutes , considering the time I waste to cool blade between grinding because it is hardened 52100 steel ..........

I really would like to see what kind of blade you grind with 320 grit belt ?Any picture to share ?

Approximately how many blades can you grind on your rough belt before it dulls and starts taking longer time?

Now, is that 8 hours grinding with a 320 AO belt? OR, with your normal method of grinding? 8 hrs seems pretty good to me for that many blades.

Oh heck no Ken. I start with a worn 36 grit ceramic and grind a 45 off the edge. Then a fresh 36 ceramic to take the bevels part way up. Then a 50 ceramic to finish the bevels. A 120 ceramic to clean up and even the plunges and clean up the ricassos. I have six file guides to help set the plunges so I do six at a time. That's my pre ht grinding. Post ht, start with a 50 then a 120 then a 220 AO. On the mono steels then go to a green scotchbrite and they are done. All damascus goes on at 400 and then 600. I do all the ffgs first and then the hollow grinds. Post ht grinding is even faster. I worked 4 hours yesterday and got 30 blades done including etching the 14 damascus blades. That included fighting two a bunch one to the point of tossing it and starting completely over with a new blade. Bolsters and handles go on today.

Dave how many blades can you get out of a fresh 36grit belt?

I get a lot Bob. I really do most of the work with the 50s. In that pic with the blades on the table ready to go I'd say probably 2 (36s) and 3 or 4 (50s). Course the blade styles make a diff too. those two big dammy kitchen knives took a lot more grinding than that little Poco next to em. And there were a few that ground post ht like the filet knife and some others.

For sure I like the cork + green chrome finish. I don't even know how to describe it. Like it almost has a texture? A visual texture that is different somehow. I've been digging going from an A65 gator to 400,600,800 cork.

I agree with you that you need a pretty fine finish to go to a fine scotchbrite. Here's a crazy idea.... what if you put some green chrome polish on that fine scotchbrite belt?!?
as Stacy mentioned, the green chrome won’t work on a scrotchbrite belt. It works great on Cork. I do all of my bevel grinding post HT. So when I’m done! I’m done and don’t have to go back over blades. How many knives you can bevel grind with a 36g 60g depends on the size of the blades. I make Culinary knives so after Petty/Parer they are 7” and up. I use VSM Ceramic from Tru-grit and on my larger blades I may only get one or two before the amount of heat from a worn belt means they get moved to the non-critical pile. I’ve been through the $$$ and it still costs me about $10.00 total for a knife I sell for $400.00 plus. So the cost in belts is low.. Stay safe & have fun!

I have been out of town for two weeks.

I would have used 220, but 320 was the closest I had to it. It worked fine and not much slower than a coarser grit. I have a p icture. Can you tell me how to post it? I don't see an option for that.

Thanks for your reply.

I'm using 3.18 mm (1/8 inch). It really didn't take long to grind the bevels and I only did it once. Additionally, I did NO hand sanding. I'll post a pic if you tell me how. I haven't figured that out yet. I am new to the forum.

If you object to 320, what about 220? I didn't have any, or I would have used that. Honestly, this method is a time saver.

By the way, that is a beautiful knife in your picture.
