Why hasnt Cru Forge V caught on?

Aldo, now that I am finished with the Belgium trip, that very question is on my short list. I just have to get some slower oil. I heard that at the time of the bankruptcy, there was close to 40,000 lbs of the round and flat bar sitting in the Texas service center warehouse.
Do you guys think it would make good Kitchen Knife stock. I understand that there was some billet left out of the original pour. I'm wondering if it's worth having it rolled down to thinner sheet.

Hard to say. I wonder how big the carbides are. If they're small and well distributed it might work
very well.
Dan Farr is the guy to ask about that, but I recall the micrographs of the stuff showing some pretty fine grain. The stuff takes a stupid scary edge.

Dan, I'd think that with that much Vanadium it would have a very fine grain. I spoke to a kitchen knifeaholic the other day and he was telling me that the 1 Cru Forge knife he had made for him was a good 15% better holding then 52100 which is his 2nd favorite steel.

Ive wondered for a while why it wasnt more liked..Ive had very good knifemakers tell me it outcuts W2 and 52100..I cant say for myself but Im gonna give it a try sometime..
Id like to have a knife made by the late muzzleloader season to give it some real world testing..
You know we can talk about rockwell, hamons, vanadium and carbides till we'er all blue in the face but when you put steel to flesh&bone the real truth comes out..

Me, too. This should be good.

I just forged a very big blade out of some 1.25" round CruForgeV today- 18" long, 2" wide, 5/16" thick. I got the LG #50 tuned up sweet, it loved chewing that steel up. I'm just starting to mess with this steel, but I'm excited about doing some cutting with it and finding out how it works.

Aldo, Yeah...I'll take some, too. I've heard that the HT is " less picky" than 52100.

I haven't gotten the CruForgeV because I have been happy with the several hundred pounds of 1084 I have gotten from Aldo, the 1095 I got from Aldo, the 15n20 I got from Aldo, and the CPM 154 I got from Aldo. I should get some to experiment with, but right now I'm exprerimenting with the CPM 154
