why I don't complain about fit and finish on production Emerson Knives

I dont get it....my $100 Spyderco Yojimbo 2 has better F&F, materials, and locking mechanism than the average emerson, is just as tough, and costs way less....how is emerson the best again?

Yea, I looked at the Spyderco Para Military 2 yesterday and wow, fit & finish is superb, even the liners are polished! Only Emerson knife I own is the Super Karambit. For the hefty price tag I could have gotten so many other knives. So why did I spent $300 for this knife? Its the best Karambit folder in the market and the wave feature is totally killer.

Honestly, I dont know why people complain. If you don't like it, don't buy it. If you own it, why complain? just sell / return/ give it away.

Opinions in an of themselves are just that, it's the interpretation that is where it is perceived as a complaint or a praise. People enjoy sharing their experiences and opinions, rightfully so as this is the correct place to do it. So long as it is kept in a civilized and somewhat educated manner, I don't see the problem with opinions.

Well said RevDevil.
I had always hated on Emerson until I finally picked up a CQC-15 in 2011...even after the thumb-stud fell off on the 4th day of carrying...Emerson rectified it within a week of my sending it in and it has handled plenty of abuse since then.
Now it is one of my go-to folders for hard use. Though it is lacking in some respects (weight, finish, wear on pockets) it still satisfies some very needed qualities in a folder.
Despite the hefty price tag and Emerson's politics, the knives still hold an important position in the industry.

It's like driving a BMW my friend. You could read about it, but you'd never really know what it's like unless you actually drive one.

First off I'm not "hating" on Emersons. I just get very annoyed by everyone deifying emerson knives and them being called "The number one hard use knife in the world" They are pretty average knives, made from average materials everyone else uses too.

And for the record I have owned multiple emerson's and STILL OWN an emerson combat karambit, so don't tell me I don't know what I'm talking about.

I've owned knives from near ever production knife maker and many custom makers, and there are much better knives out there for the money. Period. Can you still love emerson knives? Yes! I'm not saying you can't, I'm just saying don't make them out to be something they're not.

PS- I've driven a handful of BMW's, They're nice :)

I have the Emerson mini-cqc 7. I don't care about the fit and finish really and thought it was a pretty cool knife and solid as a tank but with chisel grind on the wrong side for a right handed person I found it hard to use. The main attention to detail seems to be the logo on the blade and on the 1996 designed website they sell little skull jewelry as a knife accessory which seems really weird for a 'hard use' knife that is supposed to be functional and not pretty. My Spyderco Delica is about the same length blade with VG-10 steel and is far more useful. Although the G10 handle on the Emerson is very comfortable even if it does smell lie burnt electrical components and also the tool marks underneath the blade get dirt and stuff stuck in them and is annoying to clean.

I think the Emerson knife is more than the sum of its parts. The wave is obviously the fastest deployment method and that counts for a lot but its also how it function and its ergonomics etc...

I've had like 8 of these so I feel qualified to speak on the subject.

If your Emerson doesn't have good fit, something is wrong with it... a properly fit tool made of moving parts is a proper tool.

Finish can be shitty, yes I said shitty at times, I'm not going to be polite about this. It is not important at all. The knife in my sig is not pretty either but both work.

Emersons do not slice, they don't do EDC stuff well, shit man if you need to cut paper it's probably going to fail you. It can't even cut fruit that well even.

When you need to poke holes in another person or separate two things from one another, Emerson does it every time. I've owned some pretty used Emersons and no matter how far that liner moves over, the knife still bloody works.

Although for this reliability (not to be mistaken for absolute toughness) you do have to put up with the oversized pivot moving around all the time if you don't loctite it and the side to side play when it does loosen up after a few deployments.

I don't buy these things anymore just because yeah... the 154CM isn't heat treated hard enough for EDC use, but is better for field use and sharpening, the blade grind really requires a change in technique and limits your efficiency sometimes, and the fanboyism kinda sucks. Everybody has their fair share but it's really hard to separate fact from fiction sometimes with this brand.

As for politics, I don't care, I'll even buy a Dalton, Microtech, Darrel Ralph, or an Emerson if I really end up liking something.

I have always been satisfied with my Emerson purchases, and feel that they get a bad rep for being one of the only all American produced folders . I have seen way worse fit and finish on customs and they go for $700 . I just feel that we should support Ernie because he has been making some of the coolest designed knives for years in the United States of America . How many of you can say that for yourselves ?

Btw I also think the Emerson is the best platform for a good knife pimping !

Your kidding right??. Depending which Emerson you have, they are great edc knives. Hell, I field dressed two deer and skinned one out with a CQC-11.

CQC-8 was a good slicer for sure. Some models appear to be better for EDC than others.

- It's definitely one of the best knives for pimping. My CQC-10 and Combat Karambit framelock conversions are my favorite EDC's.

Yeah but I consider that more "hard use" in the field which falls in line with how I feel they excel at. Kudos to you for being extra manly and using them that way.

I can't say I have ever poked a hole in a person with an Emerson knife so I will have to take your word for it. I would have to agree they are a bit useless for EDC.

Ive owned my fair share of emersons, everything from a Cqc-7 to a Supercommander and back.. personally i dont think they are the best knives at all.. yes they work but definetly in my opinion not up to par with some other knife makers....who charge less...and not to mention emersons sucky warranty =(... or at least thats what ive heard about it and there Customer service... I dont know what makes emerson better then spyderco? or benchmade? considering you can find the same style/type/size/functionality in emerson just at a lower price and in my opinion more ergonomically fit design in spyderco or Bm.. just my 2 cents.. not trying to bash emerson.. just wish they would drop their price a bit i think they'd get alot bigger that way... Later guys.

Emerson has some research and development behind his designs. Everybody else just copies, a la monkey see monkey do.

When the spyderco AND the benchmade that you carry in your pocket break in a tough situation, are you gonna ask to borrow the Emersons I carry?

Let's just break it down to one innovative feature that every Emerson hater dances around...The "wave" feature is a game changer for a lot of owners. No other knife deploys as fast or effortlessly. Look at all the other knife companies that copied Emerson's design. Spyderco, Benchmade, etc....

I don't get it, what is it about his politics that are in question? ( I am really looking for an answer, I don't know what the companies stance is on anything)

The only emerson I own is a benchmade cqc7 that I just sent out for the spa treatment. It's always been a solid reliable knife as far as I am concerned.
