I order almost all tip down carry knives now. I have been for a few years. But every once in a while I get one this is tip up. So I got several new knives for christmas. Tried this one out today which was tip up and this happened. The blade was slightly open when I reached into my pocket.

yeah i know it's my fault.

I got into Emersons latley and found out the old Benchmade Emersons are tip down carry. So i have been buying those instead. i don't need the hook to open a knife fast. I can open fast enough.

Plus i just don't see how tip up is better. It take me two steps to open. Whereas with tip down. My thumb is already at the part that opens the knife. One fluid movement and it is faster.

Tip-down carry does create a more fluid and natural motion for opening.
I too was bit from a tip-up carry Buck linerlock several years ago...

You have the clip set for the wrong pocket.

Don't carry a knife tip up unless the handle is on the side that touches the hand, and the blade on the other.

edit- talking about when you put your hand in pocket^

I like to carry in my back pocket also, which works fine with my Spydie Military, tip down. If you carry a tip up in the back pocket, the clip has to be on the left side of the handle, which they aren't all tapped for.

I find tip-up more convenient. In right pocket with the blade to the back the handle is positioned just right for opening. I would think that tip-down carry would require repositioning in the hand prior to opening.

This. When tip up carrying your blade shoult be up against the edge of your pocket, not out in open pocket area. At worst, I can only imagine my pocket getting cut if the knife were to somehow open up, but with it pushed against the pocket there's really no room to open anyways.

.

No its not. Its whatever you get used to.
Tip up is more fluid and natural for many, tip down for others. Its whatever you get used to really.
I much prefer tip up.

+1 on the Military back pocket carry. I love it!

Huh? People carry their knives in their pockets? Why? That's why God created sheaths.

I have done that several times, and the pants I have on now have 2 holes from tip-up knives that have opened up in my pocket. I have a slice on my finger right now from a CS Spartan that was open 0.5" when I stuck my hand in my pocket. Part of my prob is that I carry keys and other EDC items in the same pocket, which can grab a Spydie hole or thumb stud and open the knife up a little.

I have considered divesting myself of all tip-up only knives. When I do carry one, I often turn the clip around so the spine is against the back of my pocket rather than the front, so it can't fall open. It slows deployment, but saves my fingers.

thats why put layards on them to get them out and put them on the complete right side of my pocktet. BTW:what knife was it?

Ouch!

Ken44 is right though, if you are carrying tip up and you are going to clip it in your pocket, move the clip to the side of the handle so that the blade is against the seam and not into the open pocket. This way your hand only touches the handle when you remove the knife. Sometimes a knife won't be tapped for left side clips and you just have to be careful with it.

As a bonus, some knives have a good enough detent that I don't see them opening in your pocket in any way, shape, or form so the placement wouldn't really matter anyway. That's just my opinion.

I got my (tip up) Mnandi from a left-hander. I left the clip on the "wrong" side -- it works very nicely. I carry in my left-hand shirt pocket, all the way to the far left. Easy and safe to reach, and hardly anyone notices it there.

Ouch, sorry to hear that. When I carry tip up in my back pocket the knife goes on my left back pocket so the blade is resting in the corner of the pocket...mostly it's in my front right pocket though. I'm looking around to hit some wood when I say I've never had a problem carrying this way.

I've never, ever had a tip-up knife come open in my pocket... You guys must be trampoline acrobats or something.
