why I don't tip up carry

Except for the inherent risks of tip up carry as has been mentioned (and I've been bitten a few times this way), I'm one of those people who doesn't give a damn about which orientation I carry with. But I always carry RFP so that may be why. The tip carry orientation has never been a factor with my purchase of a knife. Nothing to brag about but I'm just saying it doesn't matter to me now and it never did.

I have never had a folder open up in my front right pocket in 13+ years of carrying them — this goes for both tip-up and tip-down.

I greatly prefer tip-up over tip-down for a few reasons:

It just feels natural to me.

The pocket clip tends to abrade my hand when using the knife when set-up for tip-down. The very end of the clip tends to "poke" me.

I do agree with those that say that tip-down is faster to open up though.

I would prefer to see newer knives (where the design allows it) to have 4-way pocket clips to give everyone what they prefer.

Some companies are finally offering more tip-up right from the factory: Spyderco and Kershaws I have bought lately have done this.

Others, such as CRKT and Benchmade still tend to stick with tip-down as much as possible on their liner-locks.

rfp ftw!

I've never, ever had a tip-up knife come open in my pocket... You guys must be trampoline acrobats or something.
Do not have any problem with tip-up carry for backlocks - Endura, Delica, Stretch. No risk whatsoever in my personal opinion. I also carried some BM with AXIS tip up - no problems so far. As for liner or frame locks - these are the ones I do not really trust. Open or closed. That simple.

I find tip down way easier and natural in anycase ... I don't quite get tip up

I'm right handed and carry in my right front. So for me, I much prefer top up. Much faster and fluid for me.

Yeah...I do carry my folder at my back pocket. It's always tip down type of folders. Some knife makers specifically mentioned that folders are not advisable to be carried tip up........

The only time I ever had a problem was with a Spyderco Endura Wave. That stupid hook thing was a terrible idea. So I gave the knife to a friend (who took one look at the hook and then got his Dremel and chopped it off).

Other than that, tip up and tip down both work fine. Just no hook thingies, please.

I find tip-up more convenient. In right pocket with the blade to the back the handle is positioned just right for opening. I would think that tip-down carry would require repositioning in the hand prior to opening.

second that...

Unless I'm mistaken that is the thumb of the left hand in the picture. I can easily see knives that are made for right hand only carry coming open in the pocket and causing that type of injury.

A left-handed knife that has a proper left handed clip will prevent this type of accidental injury--the knife blade will be against the seam of the pocket, which will not only prevent opening, but will also prevent your hand from coming into contact with the blade. I only buy left-handed knives, or I carry right handed knives on the "wrong" side of my body for the left hand.
