Why I hate buying a new car

I don't like buying cars.

The last one was my wife's. I played the bad guy, and hung up when he called the house after the first visit. Went into the dealership with the trade-in, blew my top at what they offered me.

Ending up sticking him with a leaky head gasket on the S-10, got the car for a bout 750 over invoice, but I'm convinced I got him on the trade.

I guess that is the best deal. If both parties think they "stuck it" to the other guy.

Good Book Dave, I read "Catch 22" easily a half dozen times.

On second thought I need to think about my previous sentence, I don't know if I like what that indicates about me...

Anyway,

Mr McDonald... Good tips on the closing styles. Guys if you search for those techniques on google you will end up at a changingminds website. Good reading.

Last car I bought, I told the manager straight out: " This is a card game , you have the power to set the price, I have the power to say no". We got there a little quicker that way, but they still always want to play the game.

"Yah, but you see, they put that undercoating on at the factory."

"Well, he's never done this before, I'll tell you. He's giving the undercoat for just half-price."

(see FARGO)

Hmmm... New cars depreciate 60 percent of their value over the first four years. I won't ever buy a new car again... and will pay cash for it too.

What sucks is I really like the new cars out today... maybe I'll pick one up in 2010 :)

I agree with you ACStudios. I look at new cars and think maybe I'll get one of those in 5 or 6 years.

Azis, I'm glad you got something that you'll be happy with. Will you still take it to the Dodge dealer and show him he missed out? And you went Japanese...

I've bought a handful of cars and trucks (used ones), and always enjoyed the process. I like doing the homework and then going on the hunt to find what I know is out there somewhere.

If I'm going through a dealer, I'll check their inventory online, and then show up at the end of the month. Or better yet, the end of a fiscal quarter. Or even better, the end of the year. I bought my current Tacoma on Dec. 28th, two years ago. They've got sales goals/plans to meet, or beat, and deadlines like these are a great time to cash in. I don't hesitate to remind them either. :D

I think that holds true for most places where you're dealing with individual sales dudes... dudettes.

Happy cruising Azis!

Hey Bamboo if you slow down a bit or stay in one town for a while pop up around the forums a little more.

While new cars depreciate quickly, there are a few benefits in going this route.

1. No worries. With the majority of automotive warranties, if something goes wrong in the first four years, it will be taken care of gratis. This has saved my bacon several times already. Granted, there are some pretty good warranties available for certified preowned vehicles, but you have to deal with the stealerships again. If you're buying it from a private party and there are gaps in the paper trail, you're basically taking his word for it. How much do you trust a stranger trying to sell you something? I trust them about as far as I can throw them, which is 5-6 feet if they don't weigh too much. Add a few feet if they're running at me.

2. Known maintenance record. The Lady Next Door is 12,000 miles past her last scheduled oil change on her Kia. Were she to trade it in, would she mention this? Probably not, and the damage done wouldn't be discovered by a casual inspection. Even if the stealership knew this, would they tell you this during the sale?

I have a paper trail dating back to when the car was purchased. There are no unknown quantities beyond how I've driven it, and should I ever find myself selling it, I won't allow this to be held against me; after all, I have a document explaining how the stealership's mechanics inspected the vehicle during its last maintenance interval and found nothing wrong with it.

<<Buy a Saturn. No bargaining you just pay sticker just like everyone else.>>

I bought a new Saturn Ion in 2004 we negotiated and I got $1,500 off and upgrade to a Ion III

I have to agree with MacDonald.....I love buying cars!!
Between friends, family and employees I probably buy a vehicle of some variation every other month. In the last three years I've probably "assisted" in the purchase of 30 vehicles. I am a restaraunt manager currently, but I have also worked street sales for a major foodservice distributor for a while (hated it.) I understand sales and I have a great time cutting through the b.s. Sometimes I almost feel bad about it. The local Suburu dealer has seen me four times this year, and now they don't even bother sending a salesman out to talk to me, only the real sales manager. One thing that is critical in every business deal is you have to be talking to a decision maker, ie someone with authority. I don't deal with anyone that can't cut the deal without gettting permission.
"oh, you gotta go and talk to someone now, eh fella? I'll go with you....apparently I should have been talking to them from the get go."
I must admit though, I do take it easy of the local Ford dealership, but they are just down the street from me and they give me a ton of business. I felt I strained that relationship enough when I bought a new Impala SS. :)

I love it!!!!

toyota is pushing for the lead in sales-they gave me a great trade and price-i think they want no 1 real bad and are selling cheap

Sage words, those. If the deal's not right, don't be afraid to walk away. In a free market economy, the seller is free to ask whatever they want, but the buyer is also to pay only what they feel is fair.

Bamboo makes a salient point about timing. If you're not desperate to have a new car TODAY, wait till month end. It's true that sales managers have goals, quotas and bonuses to hit and they will get more aggressive at month end, specially on the last day or two. My favorite time to shop is at the end of the month when it's also the end of the model year and the new models have started to hit. I'm comfortable with missing this year's killer new feature to save a few grand on last years model :)
