Why I Like Folders

After all the ups and downs of trying to do a folder and seeing good companies screw things up, we will not do a folder now unless Rowen builds it. Period.

The screw up has really turned into a fiasco and is disappointing. I'm still looking forward to receiving my order but don't feel warm and fuzzy like I did when I placed the order.

I compare Rowen to Chris Reeve when it comes to attention to detail and precision. I know when he does the ESEE-3 it will not have problems, and not need to be returned or recalled. It will either be right or it won't get shipped. We know Shon too well. Sometimes things just work out the right way even though we don't even realize it at the time.

I really think this is working out for the better and I'm really looking forward to seeing your folders.

Folders are just super convenient....

Wow, I'd have a hard time remembering all that as daily carry. I'm lucky if I remember my pants and a cigarette lighter.

Keys, wallet, lighter, knife, phone. I have a necklace I don't take off too. But that is my always with me list.

On a good day I would have the stuff below plus a phone. Can't hurt...

All I ever hear when I take out a fixed blade in my preferred hang-outs is "Nice knife. Where'd ya get it?"
"Internet."
"Ah, well never mind then. Sure is nice though. Made in the US too. Cool."

Lots of folks here just dont know how to, or have an aversion to, using the internet to buy things. Many people just dont spend much on knives either. I have switched a few people over though.

I carry an Izula quite a bit, especially at work...but I must admit outside of work, I use folders more.

What in your opinion, is the best slip joint to get? A SAK?

SAKs are the only slip joints I carry, mainly the Huntsman and Midnite Mini Champ. Here's my collection minus one or two newer acquisitions obtained after this photo was taken. (Figured everyone here likes a little knife pr0n!)

Hit the nail on the head with this one.
I always have a fixed blade (or two) near by, usually in my pack, but I never go anywhere without a folder. For my day to day chores, there is no replacing a good folder.

Could have more to do with clothing than anything. Work clothes often have pockets that take fixed blades easily, while casual attire often does not. Shirts tucked/untucked also matter. Rail thin guys that wear shirts tucked in and slimmer pants probably aren't toting a fixed blade on their belt. A bit heavier guy with an untucked t-shirt could cover a 3 easily. Somebody bigger than that wearing work clothes could have a whole bat belt and nobody would be the wiser... :D

I think people put too much emphasis on "Best". And too much trust that some harry on the internet with a nice camera can actually tell you what's best. Everyones opinion of best is different. I personally don't like SAK's. Don't mean they're not really good. Personally, I just want a sharp blade. Since I can do that myself, I just buy what I think looks good.

ESEE on the other hand, I bought because I was impressed with Mike and Jeff. I like the way they run their business.

I really like folders, but my legal situation favours fixed blades up to the length of the ESEE-4. While an Izula folder could be confiscated. No, I haven't been able to make any sense of this legislation.

I find that my folder (Strider sng or Emerson mcom) usually always gets used and abused before my FB (Izula 2 or HEST). and that's only because every time I get out my FB the sheeple stare... Real hard.
On a side note Jeff what folder did you carry before the 3f ?

Agreed, I don't think there is an absolute best, just what's best for you. I had a few "Case" style slippies when I was younger but have always preferred the sleeker more modern style, as well as the seemingly unlimited choices offered with SAKs so those have always been "Best" for me. I prefer the functionality they bring because they have so many other tools all contained in one little package. I use the screw drivers, phillips heads, scissors as much as I use the blade.

There is a best knife, no doubt about it. The best knife is:
1) The knife that you will always carry
2) The knife that will do the jobs you need it to do.

As far as folder vs fixed, whatever. I'm experimenting with fixed only EDC right now. Izy and my 4. We'll see if I go back to the Delica 4 or not. I live in the sissy-pansy north, so its interesting to take out a knife in general sometimes.

God bless,
Adam

You need to quit designing the damn things, Tom!

Folder or fixed the best knife in the world is the one that you are carrying... doesn't matter if you have a ten thousand dollar tool if its in the drawer at home.

That being said I'll take a folder for edc. I need a new one now but im gonna wait for the esee folder.

the 5 days a week im at work i carry a folder. Its convenet, and i can open and close with one hand which is nice because im constantly opening up packages/ and food items. I put my folder to more use that any of my kitchen knives at my current job(im a chef btw). Iv tried to carry my izula, while i like it i can put it back in its sheath with one hand, and it slows me done, so for the time being i carry a folder. Out of work i carry a fixed blade all the time. As soon as esee comes out with a folder im in for 1 maybe 2 since i know the quaility will be there as good if not better than there fixed blades.

I was looking at some Benchmades and Spydercos today but yet again after looking at 32 models I kind of went "Meh." It may be 2014 before we see it but when an ESEE folder hits the street it will be perfecto.

For EDC I carry a Kershaw Blur. Actually 2 of them. I use one for what ever and the other is strictly for defense in case I can't get my gun out or someone is trying to get my gun from me. If I am going into the woods or camping, hunting, fishing, or trapping I carry a FB. I have a bag that I take with me when I leave the house every day. It always has a couple of FB's in it.

Good God, Horn Dog, a Buck 110? My Grandpa and all his buddies use those things. You need to get with the times. This is, after all, 2011. Next thing you're gonna tell us that a 1911 is all that's needed in a pistol. The damn thing's a hundred years old!

Like so many religions, I could argue that the modern variants of the 1911 are all that you need in a pistol. In fact, they are one of the hottest selling things in guns right now. And I hear that they've been making a comeback in military circles for a while. If you need more than .45 ACP, you probably need a rifle, one in which the caliber starts with a '3'.

As for the OP, I do carry a folder pretty much every day, and I save the fixed-blades for around the house and in the woods. I have been known to throw my ESEE-3MIL in my back-up bag (like a get-home bag), but most days it's a folder. I have Syderco Delica in my pocket right now, to go with my Victorinox SAK, but I also have a few Benchmade folders that I rotate through.
