Why I like the regrind I did on my pacific salt.

Hey all, I did a regrind on py PAC salt last month, and I'm loving the knife. I ground the spine flat and gave it more of a point like a pm2. I know everyone uses their knives differently, and some may prefer the big wide tip that the knife comes with, but it wasn't working for me. Now it's perfect though!

In an earlier thread I was trying to describe one of the jobs I frequently use my salts for. I score the skin of certain fish like triggers and barracuda then peel the skin off. It was kind of hard to describe so my girl took some pics today while I was cleaning fish. The straight spine and fine tip work like a dream now! The next iteration of this knife should come with a tip like this IMO. If you want to lift man hole covers they make the Gayle Bradley! ;)

I gotta say man, before seeing that post when you did it I had little interest in the pacific salt, I just did not like the blade, your little bit of work on the reprofile really changed my mind abot the knife and its now found its way up near the top of my list. I just wish it came that way so I could get the black blade version.

I hear u man! I can't believe how drastically that regrind changed my perception and use of the blade. It literally went from "meh" to one of my all time favorites!

That's small modification really changes the knife! Good work and nice pictures as always!

Hi Gringo,

Let us know if the tip change makes any difference in the performance?

It looks good, but I wonder if the H1 over time will end up denting in or folding to one side or the other.

Yes sir, it makes a massive difference in function for my uses. I know you guys don't make design decisions without a reason, so I am certain you had your reasons for putting a fatter tip on the pacific salt. For my specific uses however, the flat spine and finer tip are light years ahead in functionality. The tip on my regrind is plenty strong for normal work IMO.

Time doesn't bend metal. Stabbing rocks and sheet metal does. :D. I've got 20 year old filet knives with much finer tips that have managed to do massive amounts of work without bending.

Edit: I'm not implying that the pacific salt is a filet knife. (Just using that as an example of a fine tip) I consider it an all around utility/edc that's geared toward saltwater use. I work mine pretty hard and I don't see the tip strength being an issue. Like you, I was a bit dubious at how thin it looked after the regrind, but it's held up to all kinds of use without any issues.

I have some very thin edged, fine tipped H1 Regrinds. They perform wonderfully, and are in no way flimsy. H1 is some tough stuff!

The new tip on the Pacific looks good, just like an Endura 3, except more solid. The tip doesn't look fragile at all, and it looks like the perfect fit for you, Surfgringo. Although I will say that with the Tasman, for example, the tip is very fine and a bit of care should be taken with it. I lost part of the tip on one of mine when it accidentally bumped the table lightly while doing some cutting. The Tasman's tip isn't as beefy as the Harpy's, for example.

Back to the Pacific, for my purposes, I actually like the wide 'spear point' tip it comes with. But it's nice to see that it can be easily modified for those who prefer to.

I'm digging it. The surfingringo salt. Bit thicker steel to make up for the finer point. I'm in for one if they come out. Course we could just get the h1 military or pm2 and we get a useful finer tip. Always liked sharp things to have a point, but that's me.

Yeah, we have had some threads lately on different features we would like to see in new and existing salts. The finer tip was pretty high on my list of changes I would like in the pacific salt, but after seeing how easy it was to "do it yourself" it might be better to just keep it the way it is. Those of us who want the narrower tip know what to do. Now if there were a totally NEW salt geared toward the fishing world, I would definitely want it with the finer tap.
