Why I'm deleting posts

Our troll has been banned, banned again, and rebanned. He keeps popping up under a new name.

He's been given numerous chances to reform. He ignores them. It's time to do whatever it takes. You can feel sorry for him, but everything else has been tried, so each time he's identified, I'm going back and erasing him.

If I were a troll, hell would be to have all the stuff I'd worked so hard on erased. All my diligent troublemaking deleted.

So that is what I'm doing and why I'm doing it.

Sorry if this is unpallatable. I don't like it much myself. But this is too good a home to us to give it up because of one contemptable person.

Maybe this is the straw that will break the troll's back and he'll leave us for good. If you've a better idea please let me know.

Rusty...are you just deleting his spots on the carpet or the entire thread? We have some good stuff in there that would be a shame to lose...

Of course, We'll back you either way...:D

Good.
Ignoring provocation would work best.
But deleting may help.

Is the guy being banned because he has no understanding of what a rue is or how to make it, or is it for putting the Velveeta in Red Beans and Rice? I think a more fitting punishment would be to make him cook that recipe and eat it.

I'm in favor of whatever it takes to deal with trolls too.

But even if I wasn't, Rusty, I don't think any of us have ever questioned your work as moderator here. Keep up the good work kind sir, and thank you for doing it, and for dealing with the hassle/stress it has been as of late.

I think removing the entire thread would be more effective and I wouldn't mind.

I disagree. Some of these threads contain significant input from our members. Thread drift is a wonderful thing; especially, when we decide to ignore the troll and discuss some other idea.

I wouldn't even delete the troll's words unless they were inappropriate and offensive (foul or suggestive language, racial slurs, and the like). By deleting the words we make the threads harder to read; we erase the evidence of the behavior which resulted in the termination of the member's account; and, we fuel the fires by showing that the troll can actually force our moderators to work to edit their words.

Leave the words where they stand. Trolls are a nautural part of the internet environment, and it is easy enough to ignore their meaningless banter. If someone wants to waste their time generating this grabage that is their problem; they should seek professional help. But, we shouldn't let this kind of stuff get under our skin.

edited to add:

The editing and removal of another person's words has always bothered me. I know that we are acting with the best of intentions. But, there are some who did not witness the troll's original behavior, who may suspect that we are simply censoring words and individuals. Once the words are gone who is to say?

N2Sharp has a point.

But either way suits me.

It may depend upon how much material we're talking about- you don't cut off an arm to heal a cut on the hand.

You've got my vote Rusty. Sorry it has to come to this but thanks for the good job you're doing.

When my kids were little, they would sometimes "act out" to get attention. Experts of the time said to ignore the attention-seeking behavior, maintain your composure, and expect the same good behavior standard all the time.

They are fine adults. Seemed to work.

(They DO have a somewhat warped sense of humor. Comes from their mother, I believe.:) )

Thanks DDean
Once I get them all done, I hope that they can be used to update info or at least be used for reference for Uncle Bill and Pen, and John and the rest of the forum.

Silly trolls, guess they'll learn the hard way. :D
