Why is carrying a knife looked down upon by those who dont?

Hey, if you have a good knife and you know the person you'll show it to will like it, why not?

However, it's wise to find out ahead of time if the person likes knives. If I have any doubt, I'll casually ask "Do you like good quality knives?" to check first. If there's any reluctance to answer in the affirmative, I'll likely not show anything. Some guys are skittish even about small knives, depending on their appearance, or how quickly they can open.

It's not a bad idea to have something like this one in your pocket if you absolutely need a blade for something, and you're somewhere that may be knife averse:

This little knife has a blade under 2 1/2" and the Damascus is thought to be cool by many.

Or perhaps one of those Case slip joint that your grandpa used to carry. Very little resistance to those, too.

Hey folderguy...that is a beautiful blade!! What pattern of damascus is it? I have been waiting 3 months for mine and have to wait about 5 to 9 months...but it will be worth it!!

Never seen this before, but sure. BTW Freedom is not something that is black or white. Much like justice, happiness etc. By saying is something you have or you don't is not only ignorant, it is outright stupid.

It seems as though you might have neglected to include some key words in your final sentence. I'm sleepy but I can't make heads or tails of it. Were you trying to say "By saying *it* [freedom, I guess] is something you have or you don't is not only ignorant, it is outright stupid."?

I've always viewed them as beautiful and essential too and I'm too damn old to care about people who don't agree. What do I care if someone thinks I'm nuts; they may well be correct.

Thank for the compliments on the blade. It's just a 37 layer Damascus... the knife is a Boker Magnum Lady. Here's a link to it: http://www.americanesuperstore.com/mob-01mb788dam.html

and here's a link to it on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Lady-Handle-D...ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=hi&qid=1290835685&sr=8-2

I seem to scare people without even showing people the blade i carry, Guess its a size thing... but when i pull out a knife on top of that... Oh well, my knife is legal... I think... knife laws here vary officer to officer.

That's one hell of a generalization :thumbdn:

I really wish you'd keep your personal bias about Law Enforcement out of this thread which is about people giving "the look" when knife users need their knives in real world situations.

It is not a personal bias, it is an unfortunate reality in a third world country like ours. I am not making a generalization but there are numerous incidents. During Christmas season, the Chief of the national police force orders the taping of the muzzles of all police sidearms so that there will not be any indiscriminate discharge during holiday celebrations. Maybe that should indicate to you how it is here.

Oh BTW, a lot of my best friends are LEOs(good and dedicated ones) and they do decry the state of discipline among the LEOs here. I actually am a law abiding citizen and and closely affiliated to a local LEA in an information gathering capacity and an officer of our local gun club who are composed of local businessmen who closely assist our local LEOs.

Having grown up (and lived most of my life in NYC) I can say with some certainty that it really boils down to two things: firstly, it raises the question of "what do you need that for?" and secondly, its got a lot to do with the overwhelming (and idiotic, IMHO) belief that others are responsible for doing things for you.

For example, "why do you need the knife for self defense when there are so many cops around?" Or, my favorite, "what is there really to cut? It serves no function."

A lot of these folks can't grasp the idea of self-reliance or the idea that, perhaps, you just like it. You might literally carry a knife for the same reason you wear a watch; just something you like to have.

As many have so aptly stated, sheeple just don't get it. My wife was like that for a while. Always saying how stupid it was to carry a knife. But I found that demonstrating the uses around and outside of the house, she started asking for it quite alot. I eventuallly just got her a Ladybug and she puts it on the small table near the kitchen. I think she uses a knife more than I do these days. Though she still doesn't appreciate the blurred distinction of function and art.

Anyway, it's a simple matter of perception. Until someone repetitively sees something, it doesn't register.

But the times they are a changing....

I had two handguns in my room at Va. Tech when I was an under grad and I'm almost embarrassed to type it now. My son's roommate was expelled for having a clearly toy, gun in his room.

I carried a government issued, Boy Scout looking switchblade for much of my Air Force career but I'd be thrown in the hoosegow for it if some LEO decided I shouldn't and caught me with it today.

My first airplane trip at age 9; I boarded the airplane with a rifle and a snake. The stews, excuse me, flight attendants, didn't give a hoot about the gun but were a little nervous about the integrity of the pillow case the snake occupied.

Before 9/11, I flew with a guy that always carried a big mean looking Cold Steel with the blade filed to 1/16th less than what was maximum legal. He took great pleasure slamming it into the bin.

About a month ago I forgot about the tiny multi tool I had in an odd pocket and lost it to TSA.

All this in a mere blink of time. With the excessive media scrutiny and (IMHO, bias), and the lack of any threat to those meaning harm ......... I understand where we're going but I don't have to like it.
