Why is it so hard to get a custom sheath made?

So I've emailed a few of the well known sheath makers to have a sheath made for my new Busse NMSFNO. I can't seem to get a response from anyone other than Patriot Leather, whom I think make beautiful sheaths, but I have to send my knife off to to have a sheath made. It shouldn't be so hard to get a sheath made that matches the quality of the knife. Minor rant in effect. I'm a long time member of AR15.com (2006) 5k posts, and I'll apologize in advance for being new here if I posted in the wrong forum. Anyone that has any advice will be rewarded with a smile.

Welcome to BF!!!!!, enjoy your stay.
It's not, it just takes some time for custom work of any kind to get done. Most will want the knife to ensure the fit is matched.
Maybe someone on the Busse forum knows a maker that does them, you'd probably get more help on that forum.
Best of luck

On the title of the thread I immediately thought "because no one is willing to pay what a custom sheath costs, and people even get hostile over perceived value vs cost." things like sheaths need mass production to be in the realm of what people think they should cost.

Now reading that you have contacted some makers with no response, I'm not sure other than to say small time businesses are often run by craftsmen not businessmen and as such has there own frustrations.

Personally, I think that Busses not shipping with some kind of sheath is itself a major frustration. They have high enough volume to get good pricing and aren't generic enough to be like firearms & holsters, with good aftermarket options. And Busses are meant to be used - not like they are collector art knives. Pretty hard to use a knife in the field with no way to carry it.

I've started making my own cause it seems like the area most production knives fall down on in some way or another.

How long have you given said sheath makers to respond? It is a holiday weekend afer all. Dave Brown makes awesome sheaths, if you have not reached out to him yet I would.

In leather, Leatherman and Chuddy Bear both do great work and both frequent the forums here. Like all custom makers, they get busy !! I can't speak for Chuddy Bear (though I suspect it would be the case) but Leatherman almost certainly has a pattern on hand for a NMSFNO.

In kydex, Dave Brown of Al Welke for sure..!

It shouldn't be difficult or frustrating. I don't find that customers have an issue with cost, but maybe that's because I list prices on my website.

If you mosey over to the Sheaths forum there's a sticky at the top that lists many of us. You can peruse the pics that we've posted to help you find someone's work that you admire.

Only thing that comes as a surprise to customers sometimes is that the majority of craftsmen require that the knife be shipped to them. I wouldn't personally do it any other way (being a maker OR customer) because you want the design fitted perfectly to your exact knife. Only exception is with production knives that the maker already has an example of. There are discrepancies with certain knives like Busse's, where the knife should probably be sent in even if the maker has an example.

As a side note, I'm not personally taking orders, but many guys currently are.

Good luck. Hopefully you find someone that not only does great work, but is invested in providing you a fun and interesting experience.
