Why is no one buying the WORKER model?

Not a PM2, Manix, or Military, and not "super steel" or collaboration with a famous maker, so it wasn't gobbled up by speculators looking to make a profit reselling them on eBay. The Worker may have a small but vocal following but given how slowly the 1000 pieces of the 20th Anniversary Worker from 2001 sold, it's almost amazing that Spyderco took the risk of making this latest Sprint.

The G10 Worker is a great knife. Really completes the original design.

You're right. It was a ZDP Delica with G-10 initially at $200 which even after dropping to $170 didn't have enough backers.

I reluctantly got in on that drop, but you're right about the price being high even with ZDP-189. I think it fell short by about 15 units which was unfortunate. Honestly, I think if MassDrop had come out with the $169.99 price from day 1 the drop would have been successful. Bungling the opening price by $30 with a delivery time of May 2017 is what turned a lot of buyers off.

I looked upon it as a Spydie sprint of a knife I like, in a steel and handle material I don't have, with a new "scratch" blade treatment we've yet to see on any other blades.

I'd love a Worker sprint too, just for the historical significance of the knife, but the price vs. materials issue is even worse than the MD Delica. I think I've had that Worker sprint in my cart 4 or 5 times now and always opt for another knife that isn't such a bad deal.

Hello Everyone,

I'm very drawn to the Worker model for numerous reasons, all of which are subjective.
But I'm curious why you guys think the 2014 sprint run of the original worker is still on the market?
It's been over 2 years now, and that small sprint run is still in a lot of retail shops.
So what gives? Why haven't people been buying these up?!

1. point is too pointy.
2. Seki city japan - means its probably got teflon washers, these are horrible, even tho they are smooth (im making an assumption they have these because thats what the japanese factory generally uses)
3. price is too high for a vg-10 blade knife with little of any other advantage for the price, not to mention teflon washers.

Sal, if you ever want me to buy any Spyderco's from Japan, tell them to ditch the teflon washers. yes i know they are used because its smooth and they work fine. but they have so many more con's, and the price of these is not justifiable mostly because of this fact.

if this doesnt use teflon washers, my bad... i just noticed a trend and assumed.

as said above posts others dont pay the high price for vg-10.

loving spyderco as i do,had my eye on this worker for longtime' mostly because of its rich history dating way back with spyderco,so just had to own one, grabbed the green sprint-run about one year ago, stout little knife i admit!but really overpriced for what it is,i don't hardly ever carry it,but if one is into to spyderco (as i am)you should have the worker as a collector's piece is my thought, hey' it makes me happy and even if i paid to much! thats fine with me.:)

I think it's kind of ugly. I like the scales, but the blade looks like a Delica that wanted to be a duck.

a) price. Look at the competition in that price range. Military in S110v, Positron, M2 Cru-Wear, Brad Southard etc... Sorry but VG10 and G10 just doesn't make the cut (no pun intended) in that price range. If it were a burnt orange G10 and Hap40 blade then it might compete.

b) Seriously fuggly. I try not to let looks get to me, and I hate to be the iconoclast who craps on one of Sal's original designs, but when I look at the beautiful designs of my Delica, M2, PM2, etc... they are just much more pleasing to the eye. I don't pick form over function, but they function so well that I can't see a reason not to have both. There's no need for the tradeoff.

I have one, seldom carry it though. There are better choices for edc out there...it kinda gets lost in the collection really.

Both of Spyderco's Japanese makers have used non-metallic washers in the past and may still occasionally use them on knives with locks other than the midlock. However, G Sakai, the source the Japanese Spydercos marked "Seki City" including the Worker Sprint, hasn't used anything but coppery colored metal (pb?) washers on a midlock folder for at least 10 years. Midlocks by Spyderco's other Japanese maker, Moki, are simply marked "Japan" and don't use any washers at all.
