Why is the Compact so expensive?

Simple solution: don't buy one. Move on.

Correct solution: start your own cutlery company and show them how it should be done.

Trivia: 84mm, 91mm and 93mm SAKs each use different size pin stock for assembly. I have taken apart enough of each size to attest to this being true.

Quiz: list all the current production 91mm Victorinox models that use the combo tool.

My general point however is that Victorinox is not and never was a company that tries to rip off their costumers. Their pricing is very fair. You’re paying the middle man.

2 layers < 3 layers < 4 layers < 2 layers 🤔

This is a short relatively thin tool that's just like any other tool on a SAK in terms of production. If anything, the combo tool is probably saving Victorinox a ton of money on production costs because it's easier to make one combo tool that eliminates four other tools (the small blade, the can opener, the bottle opener, and the awl are all excluded whenever the combo tool is included) than it is to make all 4 of those other tools, plus the extra backspring and the extra liner that go along with them. 3 of those tools also have to be sharpened as well, while the combo tool does not.

G Guy McVer I understand the point you’re trying to make. The fact is that Victorinox is a company that has to make money one way or the other. My guess is that the profit margin on ‘best sellers’ like the Spartan is relatively low. They likely make up for that by selling other models against a higher price. Nothing wrong with that practice.

You as a potential buyer have to make the decision to either accept it or vote with your wallet and not buy it.

Ask me and I say that even the US pricing is reasonable. I’d still buy one if I were living in the US and was in the market for said model.

It’s a lifetime buy-it-once purchase that will serve you for decades to come. I do not really see the problem but that’s my opinion obviously.

Assuming OP can afford those 20 or 30 euro/USD extra, does it really matter 6 weeks from now, or 6 months from now? That Compact will be lifelong companion.

For those of you complaining that it's almost $80 on the big retail site, if you scroll down just a little further you'll see that it's also available from the big retail site itself for only $59.

It pays to remember that third party sellers on there will often have crazy high prices, likely because someone out there will be dumb enough to pay that price for it.

I'm with yablanowitz on this one. Don't like it, don't buy it. I never saw the value of that particular model, so I've never bought it.

You realise that a Victorinox approved pin is nearly £3 quid, a tiny screwdriver £4or £5 a toothpick £1.17.
The pens can be had for a mere tenner. ( Small or large.)
Or you can buy a Tourist a biro a pair of fiskar scissors and have change for a coffee out of a pony.

I never understood appeal of the Compact yet I still believe it is offered at a fair price (at least in Europe).

Lets see.. In 10yrs I will be 75.. ;) Will they let me have a knife??🤔 Will I know even what it is??😂😂😂
John :)
I’m calling age discrimination :D. I’m 75, still have my knives and still know not only how to use them, but how to care for them;). The cost of shipping from Europe to the U.S. has gone up considerably in the last couple of years.

I ony payed $43 for mine last year and no tax and free shipping. Bought a suspension pocket clip for it and love this thing and worth every penny. Ready for them to release the 93mm Alox Voyageur which is kind of Compact-esque. Compact, Voyageur and Pioneer X are my favorite SAK's. No scissors no deal for me. Really loving my SAK Modder 84mm Titanium Voyageur

A quick google search showed them at $58.99 at wallyworld & $5 less at BHQ. I'm sure they could be found cheaper elsewhere with a few more minutes of searching. For the life of me, I'll never understand the use of that hook thingy. I think it's a waste of space. Also, I've never needed a cork screw outside of my home ever. Do people bring bottles of wine camping with them? These are useless tools to me. I have a Farmer, a cadet & I keep a classic on my keychain & love them. My only gripe would be the main blade on the classic opens on the end that the keychain hole is on. Would it be so hard to have both the scissors & knife open on the opposite end?

I think of the corkscrew as the holder for the eyeglasses screwdriver, which is one of my favorite SAK tools. When you find yourself needing one, nothing else will do!

Not true. 🙃
Bonus Trivia:
Prior to 1951 or so, 91mm knives used the same pin stock as 84mm Officer knives.
Both formats of 91mm were used well into the ‘50s, despite what most collectors think.
and
Not all 84mm knives use the same pins or layout.
I have taken apart enough old Vics to attest to these facts. 🙂
