Why is the Enuff series so expensive?

Just looking through some fixed blades on my 'want' list and came back around to the Enuff series, it had been a while. Is it just me or do these knives seem disproportionately expensive to other knives considering the size and materials? Seems like the fallkniven F1 has a lot more steel, and work on the knife, and a leather sheath for like 30$ more than the Enuff, makes no sense.

Yeah I never understood it either and it seems to be that way with all of Spyderco's fixed blades and some folders for that matter.

I have seen the F1 for less than $110 so maybe your estimate on the price is a bit high? That being said probably the VG-10. There is more VG-10 in the Enuff than the F1. If the F1 was all VG-10 instead of laminated VG-10/420J it would be a good bit more than it is. Case in point, check the prices on the Temperance. Higher production costs are probably put in to the Enuff to grind the all VG-10 blade. Just my assessment.

Yeah the fixed blades are all that way it seems. The Bushcrafter is also like 75$ overpriced imo. There is more steel in the enuff than the f1 but you'd think lamination is just as expensive as grinding out thick pieces. Idk, I don't know much about knifemaking, just going by comparisons.

The Shemp Rock is like 50$ more and it seems like 5 times more steel. Same handle material and everything.

I agree they are too expensive. For that price they should be made in the USA.

I also personally think that the Taiwan models are going through the roof price wise. So much so that I have to now pass on about 80% of what Spyderco sells. More made in Taiwan and at a higher price.

Hi HardTripper,

I guess it depends on what you are comparing to. The Enuff series, as all of our products are priced on a relatively fixed margin. the cost to make the product often varies depending on where it's made and what it's made from. We also feel the model is expensive, but being made in Japan, with Japanese made tooling for the handle and sheath is expensive to produce. It is also frustrating for us to have expensive knives. We'd love to compete with Chinese made knives on price, but not really possible made in Japan.

Of course, if you just measure materials and their cost, a Ferrari shouldn't cost much more than a Kia?

Some of our H1 fixed blades ended up too expsenive for the market and we had to disco them. We tried a market test at a very low price anbd they sold much better, but we lost money on every knife. Not a good business model.

We designed and produced the Enuff with the best of all we could offer in design, materials, construction, quality, function and long term hi-performance for a small fixed blade knife. I guess we'll see in time if the market has interest in the model.

Hey Sal, thanks for chiming in!

The design, materials, quality, and probably performance(haven't got to try one yet) is all top notch, its more the value I'm missing in the equation. I didn't want to derail too much but when the Taiwan prices were brought up I was thinking that I'd prefer what Spyderco does with awesome quality knives and prices that reflect the quality rather than what Kershaw does and stoop down to the knock off level just to win over gas station customers. I only question the enuff on a comparison basis, and not as drastic as Ferrari to KIA lol. I don't know if its just my dealer but the shemprock was priced at 179.00 cdn and the enuff at 119.00 cdn, seems drastic seeing as the steel, handle, and sheath are all the same but the size is so drastically different. If I find the enuff at 79.99 I'd snatch it up in a second, but like you said losing money on knives is a terrible business model. I don't know what the whole operation costs to roll out an enuff but I'm holding off untill the price hopefully comes down.

i'm with the: looks interesting and nice, but not 115$ nice-crowd.
a price comparable to the esee izula-2, and i'd probably own it already.

The izula-2 is stamped out of 1095 and has no handle slabs. The enuff is ground out of VG-10 and has handle slabs. You cannot compare the two blades on price since they are not similar. Any knife made of 1095 will be cheap, since the steel is dirt simple to work and heat treat.

Izula 2 has canvas micarta scales and stainless hardware, definitely more valuable than pinned frn.

More expensive raw material maybe, but probably cheaper to manufacture given the cost of the frn molds. Having said that, I too wish the Enuffs were cheaper to purchase, and hard to justify given the alternatives. fwiw, the Izula 2 with scales is one of my favorite pocket fixed blades. One of my favorite small-knife handles ever. It is also inexpensive enough that I don't get stressed when the edge encounters rocks, dirt, nails, etc.

More valuable to you maybe. The cost wise probably not. The scales are not pinned they are removable. Do you know how much a mold for an FRN scale cost? Also if you'd like to compare two models from different manufacturers it's much more appropriate in the Gen. discussion section.

I find most production knives to be fairly reasonably priced today. I remember 40 years ago what I made in a day wouldn't buy a decent knife.

Sorry, I got the Izula-2 mixed up with the other one Izula. Still a $30 differernce for VG-10 vs. 1095 makes the Enuff a better deal.

Well its a developing discussion, I can't help what's brought up as a comparison. If anything I compared to the shemp rock, another spyderco. I do know molds are super expensive and hadn't thought of that aspect, good point. I guess what I meant is I find micarta more desirable.

I had one and really liked it but sold it. I was not a huge fan of the sheath. I'm waiting for Spyderco to update the sheath then I will buy another one.
