Why is the ESEE-5 so unloved?

Everyone seems to prefer the -4 or the -6. I happen to love my -5 to death. People make fun of the thickness, that it's a "sharpened file". I love the thickness, makes the thing feel solid in my hand and like I could throw anything at it and it will still serve me well.

I love my -5. Sure, I'll probably get a -6 and a -4 (and a -3 and a couple Izulas and a Junglas), but I think the -5 will always be my favorite! :D

It isn't unloved. It just isn't a great woods knife for carving and the like. I, love it. But it does not carve nearly as well as the 4 or 6, and it doesn't chop like the Junglas.

Looks pretty solid, man. I wouldn't kick the ESEE-5 out of bed for stabbing crackers.

Nice pics, too. The jimping looks like it would be useful for bonus grip.

Yep. I love the jimping. This is my favorite part:

1/4" thick blade. I wonder if it's even physically possible to break it.

I wouldn't say the 5 is even close to being "unloved". It's just purpose built. A purpose that most of us don't do on a daily basis.

I just ordered one today, so I don't think its going too "unloved." I think it looks like it means business more then the 4 or the 6 personally.

That's a big reason I picked it. I'm a sucker for glass breakers and things like that ;) I know there are crazies out there like me that love the -5, it just breaks my heart a little when every suggestion post says "get a -4 or a -6" and then goes on to say things like "You don't want a sharpened crowbar". I know the -4 and -6 are just as good, I just think the -5 should get a little love too ;)

its a serious knife for serious business.... for a casual hike or camping trip there are lighter choices. if i was going on a serious camping trip though, i wouldnt think twice about taking it

Try an Izula II... I love my RC-4 but my Izzy see's more use in one day than my 4 does in a month. When I first pulled the 2 out of the baggie I was kinda disappointed because the blade was so tiny but after carrying it for a few month's it grew on me.

I love my Esee 5 and much as my 6.

Both are excellent blades.....

The glass breaker on the 5 would also work as a nice skull crusher.......

Maybe because it's so expensive given the blade length? You'd expect it to cost less than the 6.

i love the looks of the 5 and can't wait to get one i just have to get the fundage together first, then it'll probably be my favorite knife(next to all my other esee's)

I bought my RC-5 when the first came out as I really liked the concept, and didn't have anything like it. I really like the Eagle sheath which holds a firestarter, SAK and mini Bic lighter. Its strapped to my right leg on all flights as its main purpose is to help extract you from the aluminum and plexi. I am sure this knife would get me out if I do my part.

A Fallkniven F1 is in my flight bag, but that is not designed for extraction, but is a better woods knife. Still, my RC-5 would do just fine in a pinch on the ground for all tasks.

In a forced landing, anything that is not attached to you is just baggage, and you may not be able to get to that survival kit in the back, so better strap the basics to you. I know a lot of guys that wear a vest with the basics in it, including a good knife.

I traded for one once and when I opened the package I remember thinking how massive it was and "what the hell am I gonna do with this?"......I had no trouble selling it.

why don't you actually use it and see for yourself if it suits your needs or not? as a woods knife it was the worst out of the esee knives i have at the time (izula, 3, 4, junglas, lite machete) so i got rid of it. sure it's usable the way you can spread butter on your toast with an axe but there are better tools for the job.

Unloved!? Those things have been selling like Coca-Cola lately.

Only down side for me is the weight. It's a big hunk-a-steel.
