Why is the Midwest cheaper to live in than the coasts?

Esav, those in the rest of the country probably don't know what a real bagel is ! Not originally Jewish but austrian IIRC. Italians call it ciambelline. The real bagel is first boiled then baked, producing a chewy texture. Not hard to make yourself.

For God's sake, if you're going to live in a college town in Iowa, don't pick Ames! Jeez! What a sausage party! Iowa City is a step in the right direction, but if you really want to have a good time make it Cedar Falls, where my alma mater is. Because it's such a great teaching college, the ratio of women to men is incredible, and the chicks are hot (or at least they were when I went there)!

I wish I could give super scientific answer, but most have nailed it. However, as one who lives here, I can attest that even though things are cheaper out here (South Dakota), even the high paying jobs you had to go to college to get pay rediculously low and are hard to find. So, proportionately, living here rounds out about the same.

Depends. If you want to go to school for engineering, architecture, vet med, or any other real majors (pre-med excluded), ISU slaps U of I silly and kicks UNI's ass. :p

I have a job interview tomorrow in neighboring Waterloo for a temp position.

"In Fall 2002, the school had 12,508 (full-time equivalent) students. 97.9% of students attend full-time, while 2.1% attend part-time. In Fall 2002, 694 male students and 1,171 female students enrolled as first-time students (freshmen, typically). Male students comprised 37.2% of the student body, while females made up 62.8%."
