Why is there sometimes snobbery against Cold Steel knives? They are great!

When I was younger (I'm 40, but I'm talking back when I was 17 or so) I really liked hunting - now, for a number of reasons I'm completely against hunting (as a sport that is) as opposed to killing animals for sheer survival (of course, in 2013 who really needs to resort to hunting in order to survive in North America). That having being said, I hated to watch that clip of LT killing poor defenseless innocent animals - it is LT who should be running for his life in the wild and be hunted down - too bad there's no hunting season for the North American dumbass, cause I'd sure as heck get a permit.

Soooo, hunting animals = bad, but hunting humans = good?

I've owned an XL Voyager (sold later because of terrible ergos that made it uncomfortable to use), an OSI (that came from the factory with a half-inch section of edge torn out), an SRK that came as sharp as a butter knife (approximately a 45-degree angle on both sides) and a Rajah II with no issues. 25% satisfaction does not bode well.

Add to that the fact that I can get a competitive brand's superior product (as far as materials and workmanship go) for the same price or a little bit more and it does not make sense to buy from Cold Steel. The only thing I'll even consider purchasing from them in the future is one of their katanas, and even then it will be my last choice. IMO, Cold Steel sucks.

My Voyager XL (old version) is good.
My Master Tanto (brass fiitings) is good.
The Rajah 2 is good.
The Mini Tanto (brass fittings) was good.
The Rajah 3 was pretty decent as well.
The Mini Tuff Lite is an awesome low-key EDC that doesn't scare anyone anywhere.

The knives are good. The advertising is up for discussion, and some people have a beef with the owner.

I've seen liberals pick up a brain and become conservative. But the other way around.....Weird.

That cow that you picked up in the form of hamburger meat at the grocery store didn't go through any trauma to get to your table eh? Maybe you should watch a slaughterhouse video before declaring that hunting those poor animals is cruel. When done properly, most deer don't even know they they've been shot.

Oh, and Surefire beats Fenix.
Ford beats Chevy.
Benchmade beats Spyderco. Both of them beat CS.
And Mary Ann is so much hotter than Ginger.

LOL

I have a couple of dozen CS knives and every one came properly centered with good fit and finish. None have failed me and none have disappointed me, so I will continue to buy CS products.

Well, they do call it the Most Dangerous Game. More challenge equals greater glory.

Plus, as we all know, the people you kill become your slaves in the Afterlife, which is pretty solid motivation in my book.

I don't personally buy Cold Steel products anymore, because literally every time I have, it turned out to be a bad experience with their customer service.
I've purchased knives from Cold Steel three times in the past, and all three times they screwed up my order because of "warehouse issues."
I've sent them several emails in the past inquiring about different products, and my emails were ignored.
I had a couple of phone conversations with their customer service agents, who talked over me, were indifferent about their "warehouse" mistakes, and were rude to me.

...I also think the logos and gimmicky knife names they stamp all over their blades are obnoxiously over-sized and unnecessary.

I'm amazed that this thread has not been moved to W&C yet. It's been raised from the dead several times.

I saw a video on YT of a fruit ninja, mercilessly hacking at citrus and melons with a CS Voyager XL.
Oh, the horror, the horror.....
I could never own a CS product in my life after witnessing such violence toward helpless fruit!

I have owned dozens of blades, including randals, but still my favorite is the CS R-1Takes a better edge, tough as it gets and takes a scary sharp edge. Age 67 have been through many knives have made many knives. I like the Sandwiched blade R-1

I have visited this forum many times and read many of the posts here. There may even be a few guys that slam me because this is my first post and thats okay. I am not affiliated with CS. I like everyone here has an interest in knives. I have been carrying a knife daily for over 30 yrs. and I have used a knife successfully to defend myself so I am a firm believer that a knife can be used effectively for self defense. I do own a few CS knives and many other brands as well. Do I think CS knives are the best, no. I personally know Lynn Thompson and he is actually a good guy. We were introduced through a mutual friend (One of LT's instructors). Can he be over the top with the marketing, I'd have to say yes. Is he overweight, yes. Is he capable with the use of weapons, absolutely. Lynn is actually a martial artist that owns a knife company not a knife company owner that pretends to be a martial artist. He is very capable with weapons and without. I can attest to this first hand. He has a great training facility on site at CS and trains many hours a week. Lynn is a wealthy guy that is passionate about his company as any owner should be. And just for the record the knife I have on my person right now isn't a CS but that doesn't mean I haven't carried one before. I didn't post this to make waves and disappear. I plan on posting more and look forward to having some of my questions answered by some of the knowledgeable folks on this forum.

Welcome to the forum.
I have no problem at all with your post and dont see, why you think you would get slammed for it.
...but then of course, I have several CS products and happen to like them quite well.
Some CS knives dont work for me - others do. With a huge model range like that, I dont see how it could be otherwise.
I have no problem with the marketing - shows what the blades can do. Sort of the point (excuse the pun).

Ohh, dear!

I think the man above has the love-hate appeal but without him, a number of us won't know much about knife; My Espada and Voyager Large are absolutely wonderful piece and they worth every penny spent.

CS fulfills the mischief in us.Lynn just made it a lot funnier to watch; with all these gnawing, Lynn is getting free publicity, following the likes to Eminem and Marilyn Manson.

As someone who has owned/used/destroyed several different pocket knives by different company's (spyderco, kershaw, crkt, Camillius, sog, opinel, Mora ect.) I would have to say that I wouldn't discredit Cold steel folders(I don't own a Fixed from CS so I won't speak on it)

My American lawman finds it's way into my pocket more then any other knife I own. I will post my thoughts on this knife in a completely Disjointed way so bear with me.
I can easily open and close it one handed which is a must for a work knife
I don't use pocket clips and took the clip off of the knife.
Lock strength is important to me. (I generally prefer fixed blades for heavier cutting but have worked at places that would fire you for carrying one) and don't get me wrong I love and use various slip joints.
Yes Aus 8 is a slightly softer steel (which I tend to prefer with work knives, Rolling is much easier to fix then chipping
I have had no problem with edge retention as it lasts a work day, and I find it sharpens easy
I would much rather take bets on aus 8 with a consistent heat treat then a cheaper knife in the same price range with a higher grade of steel and a ???? heat treat
(I spent less then 50$ on my lawman with shipping) wouldn't be logical to compare it to a 100$+ knife.
as for cold steels marketing I don't think it's meant to be taken seriously (I am a fan of the freaking meat bicycle as that was hilarity)

I am a fan of knives, not brands myself and use knives that work will for me

Drunken post complete

Thanks for the welcome

I have to admit LT is a little over the top at times but I have also seen first hand how he treats his friends and employees. The employees that I met had all received shooting lessons and gotten pistols as gifts from LT. From what I have seen he can be pretty generous as a matter of fact the few times we have met I was given knives by LT and told that if I see something else I would rather have to help myself. I never did, but I thought that was pretty cool.

I have a few of his early Tantos, couple Kukes later on, the shorter trailmaster and the Outdoorsman.
I just realized I have one of his push daggers in my desk...that's money right there.

He was often boastful and those videos as referenced above...OK...but to be honest with you...I never thought I'd be attacked by multiple oil drums or car doors so I just chuckle and move on.
