Why Lanyards?

I don't know if this wasa mentioned in any of the above links, but a lanyard would come in handy is you dropped your knife/tool into water...just grab a stick and go fishing for it if you can't jump in and get it.

"Everywhere" huh? Hmmm well not here...lol. I love dollars stores but i've looked in the local dollar stores here with no luck.So i can spend 5+ bucks in gas continuing to look around town or i can spend 5 $ online and get 3 for 5 bucks. Thats a reasonable price and i was going to make an order from Rotokid for modding supplies anyway.

Hmmm Mirror-saw you are from Trenton? Thats relatively near Peterborough isn't it? Easterly past Coburg? I lived in Ptbo. for a couple of years and i think i may have passed through Trenton once or twice.
In Ontario dollar stores are actually real "dollar stores", things are priced one dollar. They are not all like that here in Atlantic Canada. Maybe 1 in 5 is an actual "dollar" dollar store. Here Dollar store is a generic name kinda thing more correctly they would be called "mutiple dollar stores".lol.

depending on the length - a short one can assist getting something out of a belt holder-like a zipper pull-especially with gloves-longer ones-well they can be great tethers so its attached

and besides the other great reasons posted above-

i use short lanyards on my mini pocket knives (sak classic or mini champ etc) when possible-

somehow, it seems to me at least, that a small slick plastic knife can easily slide out of a pocket-theres not enough bulk to sandwich it in

-and they have slid out on me, sitting or otherwise -but attaching a shorter 'lanyard' or zipper pull with a knot or some plastic pull tab type end helps prevent this and seems to anchor the little thing in your pocket and reduce sliding

and i think a lanyard on smaller items somehow helps me from losing or overlooking them even if not attached to me

That's strange that they're not all over the place there, i see them all the time. Although i have to admit i've never seen those "U" clips before. Yes, Trenton is relatively near Peterborough, i have family in Peterborough too. I'll be moving to Toronto in May though, and i'll hopefully never have to come back. I've seen, and actually referred to the dollar stores you're talking about as "mutiple dollar stores" too haha. I've seen prices in there upwards of ten dollars for one item

All good reasons given above. Personally, I don't use lanyards on all my knives, but lanyards are great when working on a ship, up under a bridge or anywhere that a drop would equal a loss of your equipment. I'm looking into getting a coiled lanyard for my LM since I never separate it from it's sheath unless I'm working on something at hand.

Also, for a survival-type knife having a lanyard means always having a knife capable of being lashed to a stick to serve as a spear. Other than that, 550 is really handy to have around, the more the better. If it doesn't get in the way too much I'd recommend a 550 lanyard on every knife/tool you can put it on. I don't have a lanyard on my EDC folder because it's primarily a defensive tool and I find a lanyard gets in the way with my particular style of knife self-defense. However, if I suddenly found myself with nothing but my folder to rely upon and had to use it for other tasks it would very quickly become acquainted with some type of lanyard.

New post? What is the best emergency lanyard? Shoestring, strip of cloth, braided grass, braided hair, wire? Throw some ideas, I'm listening!

Yea thats why i have it. For emergency cord or for spear assembly. Plus they do looks sweet:thumbup:

In the Marine corp We dummy corded every thing. I got out of the habit for quite a while after I retired from service. Then I started kayaking, first trip out I lost my keys and knife. So I learned to tie every thing to my self. Now you would think that would be enough of a lesson. I guess I'm just a slow learner because then I got a sail boat. First trip out the knife goes to Davy Jones. I've been making lanyards for every thing. I may not use them on dry land but if I even hear a faucet run I put a lanyard on my knife.

Do you have Ace hardware stores in your area? That's where I got my clips. They were in an array of plastic containers near the store front in different sizes, about $1 each, or close.

What I can't find is a local source for split rings in SAK (Vic Tinker) sizes. Used to be available at some key shops, but none lately. The one knife specialty shop in my area that carries SAK accessories has been out of them for more than a year.

Suggestions, anyone?

Thanks for the info unfortunately no Ace stores here.
But heres an online source for SAK rings for you

I'm getting to the point where i hardly buy "offline" anymore.lol.
Gas is expensive and looking/shopping around a lot burns up time and hardly ever nets results. 5 minutes online and i can find what i need as cheap or cheaper than i can get it here (even if by some miracle i can find it locally).
I know you can call the stores and ask about availability of stock but its kinda pointless. After wading through all the "press 1 for this press 6 for that" business then waiting on hold you will have eaten up at least a half an hour (or more).
And i've even had a few stores say 'oh yeah we have that in stock" then you get there "no sorry we don't have any". Arggh!
I have however noticed that the websites of a few chain stores now have specific stock availability listings for individual stores, thats definitely an improvement!

thats cool i like T.O unfortunately i only got to go there a handful of times when i lived in Ont. I was doing the "poor car-less student" thing and Ptbo was beyond the range of the Go-train.
:grumpy:

Nice farmer by the way. I just got mine about a week ago. Great knife!
:)

The rings are 30¢ each. One, with shipping and handling comes to $7.79.
Many thanx, but LOL! That's more than the cost of gas, if I can ever find one locally.

Yeah the shipping on that is ridiculous. I wasn't recommending (or not recommending) that retailer just pointing the availability out from that particular site. There are other sites.
But not all online retailers are that way regarding shipping prices.I've seen some ebay stores charging 18$ to ship a single zippo or a SAK but there are a few places on ebay that ship cheap, shipping zippo's and swiss army knives for a 3 buck flat rate.
Really i wouldn't expect anyone to order a single 30 cent item!

Personally I save my needed items up and do a bulk order.
I've bought a bunch of parts SAK's for modding recently so i need spare toothpicks/ tweezers/micro screwdrivers panels etc. heck i even need 6 or 7 rings myself (i now have almost 30 SAKs!)Or maybe the next time i want a new knife i'll just add the little items to the overall order.

Thats the nice thing about collecting pockets knives over fixed blades, they are a heck of a lot cheaper and you can indulge more often. I've purchased quite a few knives in the past 4 months, over 20 (new and used from ebay) but that still adds up to a lot less than the cost of a single high end fixed blade. I did the "big fixed blade (factory)knife" collecting thing, i have enough and i don't see me buying anymore in the near future. Right now pocket knives/multitools are more fun. Anyway the modding thing is half the fun with SAK's anyway.
lol.

just a quick note of caution

you should NOT use 550 cord with anything worn around the neck
it is too strong (meaning strong enough to hang yourself)
for neck lanyards please use something that will break if it should become snagged etc

just something to think about

An easy way to fix this is to use the beaded chains used on dog tags. Cut the ends of a length of 550 cord pull out all but one of the inner strands. Tie the final strand to the beaded chain pull the chain through the 550 cord then use a lighter and a butter knife to melt the ends( dont melt the ends together). Leave a little of the chain exposed. The chain should be strong enough to support anything you wear around your as well as the force of pulling, but will prevent accidental hanging. I use this method on my neck knives as well as my dog tags as a way to silence/subdue the shinny beaded chain as well as keep the chain from grabbing at the hairs on my neck and chest.
