Why Maxpedition?

If Bladeforums had an official packmaker, it would appear to be Maxpedition. While we seem to have a healthy level of disagreement about our knives of choice, it seems everyone here has at least one Maxpedition bag.

Not me.

I've got a couple different bags and packs, but no Maxpedition bag. My current favorite day bag is a Kifaru X-ray, but I've also got a canvass Duluth bag I like a lot. What I really want to know is why you guys like the Maxpedition stuff so much?

If I were to get a smallish "possibles" type bag for day trips (water, little food, fire-kit, minimal survival kit, rain gear) which would you recommend?

Thanks in advance.

My bags lately tend to be from County Comm but I have and have had others. Maxpedition has too much military styling for my liking. I do not appreciate all the attachment points.

I've only got 2, but one thing that makes me like them is they are pretty well put together.

I have two. Both are khaki as I try not to look too tacticool and it fits wherever I tend to go. I have a Colossus for hiking and a last resort attache. It is the toughest briefcase I've seen and takes very good care of my laptop and business papers.

I have a variety of packs and cases for my different uses, by Kinesis, Lowepro, Photoflex, Incase, Osprey, Mountainsmith, Dana Design, and so on.

I have no Maxpedition products. They look like they make some good products, but not best suited for my needs. So far, I've seen nothing from them that compels me.

I got the Jumbo pack for this exact purpose. I really like the side pouch for the 1L nalgene +canteen cup, instant access to your beverage and it's a lot more comfy than carrying the army canteen on a belt. Its a really well designed and executed bag, no complaints.

I'm looking at my first maxpedition bag now. I am looking at the gearslinger series for nearly the same purpose.

I was going to go with the colosus versipack due to it's being close to the same dimensions as the military buttpack that I curently use. However upon a bit of consideration the gearslinger offer greater capacity for the same cost.

Right now I'm stuck between the Malaga, Sitka and the discontinued but still available Typhoon.

I'm looking at maxpedition mainly due to durability. Organization enters in somewhat as it will be an EDC bag.

Lots of pockets, easy to organize, easy to attach other pouches and such to and bulletproof.

I want to like Maxpedition, but so far I've just got their Micro Wallet. I picked it up probably 10 months ago, and haven't taken it out of the plastic yet.

I actually have been getting more interested in tacticool/MOLLE gear lately, but simultaneously I've been experimenting with trying to choose USA-made items.

With so many innovative designs, I'm sure I'll pick something up eventually. But so far any given Maxpedition product that I'm interested in seems to have a USA-made alternative for the same price. I've been getting some great Spec-Ops and Tactical Tailor stuff lately, and looking at some $$$ Kifaru designs.

Shoulder/sling bags just don't work for me, though they look pretty cool when they're not too busy being MOLLE man purses. :p

I have a little Maxpedition waistpack...I like it because it's overbuilt, without being too heavy. Besides the main storage area it has TONS of little slip pockets and loops, but they are all usefull and not gimicky.
I stuffed a fairly comprehensive survival kit into mine.

The first Max I bought was a versapak fatboy and I really didn't like it. Tough as nails but the orginazation wasn't right and I did not like it hanging on the side.

After being on this forum for a while I got a Protheus which I really like. Lots of good pockets. Can hold a cooking cup and your rain jacket. Quite a lot of space for a butt pack. Strap your water on top or get a mini rolly polly for your bottle.

Here's a picture with a Gunny on top.

For me, it's bang for the buck. Durability and utility for a fraction of the price of the high-end bags.

I'm not denigrating bags like your Xray or Myster Ranch, McHale, etc. Their quality is generally impeccable, but I can get a tough durable Max and have budget for other gear I need or want as well.

Here's a vulture to cool you off:

Generally, I'll get a Maxped pack or pouch if I have a specific set of gear I want to carry. Reason being is that Maxped are great for organization (over organization to some). So if I have a few specific items, I can put them in a Maxped and keep everything in place and easy to find rather than having it rolling around in a big pocket.

Generally, I will go with a made in the USA product if I can, but Kifaru, TT, Spec-Ops, etc don't usually have the organization built in to the degree that Maxped has.

That said, if I don't want or need the organization, I'll use something else. I have a lot of Duluth Pack stuff, Kifaru, some TT, and quite a few SDS GI MOLLE stuff.

Overall, out of an entire walk in closet full of gear, I have 4 Maxped pouches.

Maxpedition just seems to cater especially well to survival types being pretty rugged, loads of pockets and pouches and being very versatile !

why Maxpedtion?

- bombproof construction
- bulletproof warranty
- excellent customer service
- they listen to their customers and try to utilize their ideas and designs
- endless selection
- can be built up like LEGO (ie: add on pouches, etc)
- subdued colors
- a place to put everything, both external and internal organization

etc

:)

I would recommend a Maxped Jumbo. Room for woods gear and food, has a water bottle holder that holds a 40 OZ or smaller SS water container. You can add on pouches, morale patches, shoulder strap pouches etc.

As has been mentioned, beatability.

I have thrown mine against rocks at Joshua Tree, down sandy and coarse slopes and against cactus. Well, the cactus thing was on accident. Still, I love that my friends reactions were like "...N..o..don..'t..." and then "Hmm". Probably not the smartest thing to do on my part but it took it like a champ.

Somebody has to do the destruction test's, right?

I bought a bunch of Maxped stuff and slowly got rid of them. I really like Kelty and their packs.

The only Maxped gear I have now is a bottle holder and a pygmy falcon that I'm not sure I'm going to keep.

IMO there are too many freakin' zippers, straps, etc. on the maxped stuff. Just seems a bit over engineered to me.

Just my opinion don't flame me.

I just like them and they work for me. Have 4: Falcon II, Devil Dog, 10x4 bottle holder and a Monkey Admin pouch all in khaki. Had the Falcon II the for a few years and it still looks new. I carry it everyday.
