Why No Aluminum Handle Spydies???

G-10 is not 3 times the cost of FRN.

I don't know what type of "testing" you are doing that FRN does not serve? FRN has served well all over the world, from Anarctica to the North sea.....But, that's why we use so many different handle materials.

You may have some "personal preferences" that you might see as "improvement", but we've been "improving" the Endura for 17 years, mostly based on customers' suggestions. Perhaps you need a few more "miles" on your Endura, and you might find much to appreciate.

I've searched through your online catalog Sal. Unless I'm missing something, the the jump from an Endura FRN VG-10 to a Spyderco with G10/VG-10 is the Caly (retail price difference of $30-$40 higher for Caly). If you want G10 and ZDP, the cost is double that of an Endura ZDP w/FRN. So yeh yur rite I'm exajerating a little. But to me and alot of others that is still a huge price break.

I guess what I'm asking for is more choices in the Delica/Endura line, Native series, and Centefonte. As they are my personal favorites. I know you probly like your customers to buy an "entry" level knife like an Endura and aspire to upgrade to the better models. I would just like better materials in those lines. Maybe I ask for too much???

Well, everyone has their own needs and wants when it comes to knives...

I think the steel liners of the Endura 4 work very well to add strength and rigidity, but truth be told, I prefer the unlined version (actually the Pacific Salt).
Yes, they flex a little when doing tough cutting, but I've never had one fail to perform.
And the light-weight makes them perfect for summer carry.

Maybe a carbon fiber Military would work better for you?
It is more expensive but it should last a very long time.

Still, if it's aluminum you want, there are some other makers that offer such knives (Browning, Microtech, Protech, Gerber, CRKT...)

Good luck,
Allen

Hi JTallant.

The early early Centofante's were also aluminum.

Right now we have so many variations of the Endura that we would have to drop something to add something.

I'll keep you suggestion in mind. Maybe a sprint?

I don't know, the vast majority of the people I know are fine with the FRN, or SS handles. Remember that many people like the FRN but it because of it's very grippy texture, with the bi-directional handle.

I'd hate to see any of the current Endura's go, there all great.

I've never had a problem with even the unlinered FRN knives. Neither has my brother, who seems to think that I have an unlimited supply a Spydies, by the way he uses them.

You also have to take into account the fact there is a large difference in labor between FRN and G-10. FRN is casted in molds, so there is very little finishing involved. G-10 on the other hand has to be machined, and finished. That's where the price difference is coming from.

There's nothing wrong with wanting better materials, but as is common for me to point out, most people want better materials, while retaining the original price point. A G-10 Endura would probably be a little more expensive than the current Caly 3 you are referring to. An entry level knife needs to be reasonably priced, and for someone just getting into Spyderco knives, that's too high of a price.

Besides, the easiest solution to your dilemma would be aftermarket modification. Have G-10 or Aluminum scales made for your Endura.

Well, none has yet mentioned the main advantage of FRN (though it is probably advantage only for manufacturer) - ability to injection mold it. Therefore with different type of handle material you are increasing the price probably to the SS version or even more (machining aluminium is harder on tools than machining steel).

I don't know why I have such an aversion towards aluminium in the handles. I have a couple aluminium spydies (Salsa, lum Chinese) that perform great and I simply can't have a specific complain, yet fact is I'd take any other material over aluminium. :o

Perhaps it suffers the same stigma as FRN. There are those that just perceive it as a "cheap" material...when in fact both are sorta high tech. We even us aluminum for airplaines and car engines now-a-days.

Aluminum is also great for Cookouts and for making thinking Hats...
