Why No Lockbar Stabilizer for Sebenza?

And for what it's worth, your work kicks a$$. A friend of mine got me looking at your stuff at Blade this year and I must say, for the price, your framelocks are the best value on the custom market right now. I was truly impressed.

I don't think anyone set out here to criticize your work. You know how some people are opinionated, and let words fly (myself included, many times). Please don't take it personally. We're all still learning, after all.

stjames, I suppose since you have made and designed so many knives you know what is proper in the design of a framelock?

Rick, take it easy, no need to be rude or sarcastic. I did not post anything about your work, designs or knives, don't take it so personally.

I suppose it is because I have owned and used so many framelock knives that I have an opinion as to what I expect from one. I know the exact issue you are addressing, as stated I have seen knives with the "squeezing" problem you describe, that is what I mean by "solid in the locked position". I believe if the blade tang is seated properly on the lock bar you won't have a flex towards the spine, it is one of the criteria by which I judge a framelock. It is not inherant in every framelock, I have yet to see the problem on a knife produced by CRK, Tom Mayo, Kit Carson, Ken Onion, Scott Cook or Mike Obenauf.

I look forward to seeing your work at the BAKCA Show next month.

Professor, Thanks so much for the kind words, yes, I do get opinionated myself haha so I should know not to get so jumpy :D I look forward to seeing you at Blade next year!!

James,
I should have looked at your sig line. I know you have collected and owned many framelocks. and yes you do know framelocks, sorry I was outa line in being sarcastic! I just got caught up in the moment :) Sometimes this vertical play is so slight that it is barely noticeable.even with the "proper"engagement if there is not anything to physically prevent that bar from flexing, it will...even if it moves a couple of thousands vertically(which you probably wouldnt detect with your hand) it is still movement and subject to the conditions I mentioned.....Ken Onion and I both talked about this problem years ago,as he was aware of it as well. I really do look forward to meeting you in person at the BAKCA show! And please allow me to buy you a beer for being rude! Thanks James!

Rick, No problem, I know you build a great knife and never intended any offence to you or your designs.

Second round is on me in Palo Alto!

I did not realize you were the maker of the FireTac and had no intention of bashing your work, if it came out that way, I apologize. I was just curious why the Sebenza, the grand daddy of all "integral" folders does not have this stabilizer bar feature. Like I said, its just my opinion, when I look at the stabilizer bar on other integral folders, it just looks unnecessary. Furthermore, if one was hardcore, they would not be using a folder in a life and death situation. They would be using a fixed blade. Since folders have moving parts, they are more likely to fail than a fixed blade. The chances of a fixed blade failing is vertually zero or you can just use a sebenza! ;)

James, Looking forward to it!!...I just realized looking at the calander that its coming up soon! I better get to work! haha

TKD, No problem, sometimes I do get pretty sensative :) The sebenza IS the grandaddy of all framelocks and cudos go to Chris for coming up with the concept..the Lockbar Stabilizer is my design and I only licened (sp) it to Strider..The stabilizer is one of those items that since it outwordly doesnt do anything like a new locking mechanism or new blade style its hard for people to understand just what it does..the benefits are behind the scenes so to speak. But once you see themechanics behind it then its better understood. As for straight knives in life or death situations..in a military sence yes, I would opt for a straight blade IF I could carry one..BUT there are alot of situations like EMS or rescue work where we cant carry a straight blade..a folder is our only option,I could only imagine what medical control would say if I carried a knife on my hip in the back of a squad! So I carry a Firetac! ;) or my new model Flame...but if I didnt have those yes I would definitly carry a sebby :) Thanks!
