Why no love for the Arete?

I love the look of this model but it seems to not show up to much on Fridays and you don't hear it mentioned to much in threads. Am I missing something, because to me it looks like it might be one of the best knives in the entire line up.

I'd venture to say that they are just less common than other models. IMO, its a great design; very versatile, well thought out, and a hard worker. Andy seems to do 1-2 every 3 runs; with that being said, there are a lot less out there than say bushfingers or hiking buddies -- with that being said, those who own the knife all unanimously swear by it! It also doesn't hurt that Andy always seems to put awesome handle combos on all of his arêtes!

I love the Arete. I think everyone that has one does. It's a great model. Nice spearpoint blade. Very comfortable handle.

Not many of them come out on Fridays, and folks that have them tend to keep 'em so you don't see them on the flea market very often.

This thread needs pics.

I guess mainly I don't have one yet because that Tal-something-or-other is always going on all ad nauseum about them and stuff...

All kidding aside, I'm still working my way to it. I really like the lprofile, one day the right grind and right handle are going to pop up while I can afford it and I'll have one. Most of the ones I have seen have been gorgeous, but for a while most of them seemed to be scandi, and I'm really just not a scandi kind of guy :)

I just scored an Arete a few weeks ago. It is a very nice design by Talfuchre (Diomedes Industries.) I am actually just waiting for a sheath from him so that I can start carrying it on some hikes.

Like xxwjtxx said above, it is not as popular as the Hiking Buddy or Bushfinger. I have all three of those models. The Arete is very svelte for its size. I am very happy with it.

I know the Bushfinger is the model everyone seems to run for in that size range, but those pics with the Bushfinger and the Arete laid out right next to each other really shows the differences in the two models. Based on those pics alone (I have not handled either of them) I would take the Arete over the Bushfinger any day as a woods knife.

Hiking Buddy, Arete, Bushcrafter pretty much share the same handle shape. While the Arete and Bushcrafter are the same size, as Andy says

Its funny how two bushcrafting knives with almost the same measurements can be so different

Been thinking about offering mine up in the trade thread, problem is I don't know what I would want.

That is a beautiful arete!!! I will happily buy it from you if you ever decide to sell.

When I decided to get a fiddleback I set my eyes on an arete and a hiking buddy. I had no idea how hard they were to come by. I have now acquired several other models and I still can't wait to get an arete! I think the green one in Phil's post might have been the one Andy made a light saber reference to. I almost cried when he said that because I tried to get a hiking buddy and missed the arete. The light saber comment hit a deep cord.

I admittedly have never had one in hand, but the Arête looks to me to be closer to the traditional Kephart than Andy's Kephart. Now I LOVE Andy's
Kephart design and suspect that will be my upcoming purchase, but as Andy has admitted the traditional interpretation of the Kephart appears somewhat boring so he made his "sexy." I wonder if the Arête simply has that "flaw": it is a brilliant tool for its purpose as a woods knife, but it doesn't have enough "sexy."

I know what you mean Patrick. It is not just the camera angle. The Arete is more lean and svelte than the Bushfinger. Imagine if Eva Longoria was standing next to Kim Kardashian. Both are very curvy...,"butt" one is a little wider than the other. ;)

Skystorm, your Arete is a real beauty with the burlap, bolster, and beauty pin. I think that you will regret letting that one go unless you get a good trade.

Hasco, yes my Arete is the one Andy called the "light saber." I still can't find the button to turn on that sound effect though...

I personally don't care for the original kephart. It really lacks sex appeal and is quite boring IMO. I don't like the Arête because it's like a smaller version of the original Kephart design, but then so is the Bushcrafter. My tastes change with the weather, so if I ever wanted to go with a kephart style blade, I would go with Andy's heavier Bushcrafter over the Arete. But, if I saw the right arête with crazy cool scales (dyed blue sycamore), heavy fiddleback texture, and in CPM154, I might not be able to pass it up.

It's my favorite model by a MILE. Perfect balance of all my needs. It's the only one I actually want to have a few of just so I can rotate them and not have too much wear and tear on just one.

I'm a big fan of the Arete, i just havent had a chance to own one yet. the handle appears to be extremely similar to the BC which we all know i'm crazy for the Bushcrafter.
PS the sexiest FB is the Bushboot (dagger grind) end of discussion!

I can not deny the sexiness of the Bushboot lol, but it's in a smaller category :D
