Why no love on the Spyderco forum for the PITS?

I really like the blade shape, a very industrial yet elegant looking knife. It might make a good special occasion and dress knife to keep it in good shape. I like the polished look, My first thought would be to have a thin crystal clear acrylic scale incorporated would be a welcome addition to forgive the light wear of carry and use.

I've been eyeing the PITS up for a while, finally ordered through Massdrop last week as the price was bearable though it'll take some time to arrive. Personally I've no issue carrying a locking blade here in the UK as I can justify it, however there's something really handy about slippies that I love, and find an excuse to carry. Really looking forward to getting this one. 😀

I'm a big fan of the PITS and have shared my opinions and pics of this great knife many times over on the Spyderco forums. Here's some more eye candy for this thread. Cheers, DI :)

^^^ Very nice collection! I have the bottom two in your first picture. Hoping to one day pick up the top one. :D The PITS and the ATR pair so nicely not just in looks but in blade geometry, size, and function.

It wasn't designed for nation's that allow locking knives, but you knew that.

To be sure. I'm not sure what your point was. Perhaps you were being snarky. I just said it's a nice knife but I'd prefer it had a lock. Who its designed for was not even an argument or point I was contesting.

You actually said something slightly different.... You state that it needs a lock which could be taken to mean you believe it's not fit for purpose??

Beautiful knife hands down. But a big knife like that needs a lock IMO.

In this case I would disagree with you based on design concept and engineering.

I think it's a great example of a knife that doesn't need a traditional lock, as it is designed to all but lock unless you are torquing or thrusting the knife and only holding the last inch or so of the handle. Otherwise, you would really have to try to get it to fold on itself.

I will concede your point, having said the phrase "needs a lock" as it is my opinion (which is what I said). And that my opinion in needing a lock could be considered contrary to design and engineering. I was wrong to type the word "needs" as I really meant, "A knife like that, for me, I would prefer it had a lock"

I was not shopping for PITS haters, and I did not expect anyone to agree with me. But to assume I was not aware of who they were made for was insulting.

So, for the record: I like the PITS' overall look, the material, the design, the designer, the company, and all those who really like it. I am not disagreeing with you. I'm sure the engineering, function and reliability is spot for the knife that it is. I am fully aware the knife was designed for our UK brethren, and I am happy Spyderco has offered up a large non-locking folder.

I just wish it had a lock so I could get one too, because I prefer a large blade, such as it is, have a lock.

Pretty impressive collection of Ti folders there DNA...

I guess size is relative, but I do not consider the PITS to be a large folder, it's more like a gents folder IMO. It only has 2.7 inches of actual cutting edge, a hair longer than a Native 5 or Caly 3.

That is normally the smallest I will EDC. :)

I was just doing another search about this model, and there is not a lot of talk about it. Does anyone have one that they can post a review of? I have been considering one for a while now, but would like to see what other forum members experience is with this model. Anyone?
Thanks,
Dave :)
I wouldn't expect a lot of talk about the PITS because I'm fairly sure that the price tag and the absence of a lock combine to limit interest, at least on this side of the Atlantic. You might have better luck on one of the UK based forums.

As for me, it looks like a well made knife, but one I have no desire to own due to its lack of lock.

The design does look like it might allow a locking version to be produced, using either the Crawford Lift Lock or the AG Russell "One Hand Knife" lock. To be honest, that's what I thought it was when I first saw it.

i would love to get one especially since it's locking mechanism makes it a legal carry in germany. however more than 300€ asking price, usually even 350€ and more, is just more than i am willing to pay, sorry.

In my mind it's a fancy slipjoint. The LoneWolf city knife had a similar notch in the tang and protusion in the spring, in a straight up slipjoint design. It had two divots in the tang to give it a semi-half stop. There are lots of slipjoints bigger than this knife.

Does it have more of a lockup either open or closed than the Tezuoala Slip-It?

Definitely, I'm a big fan of the Terzuola Slipit too but I think the PITS is in a non-locking league of its own. Due to Mike Read's design, if you are gripping the handle securely then it won't close on you. It's your strength of grip on the spring bar/spine that is stopping the blade from closing on you, not the choil as with other Slipits. There is still a decent guard just in case and also to stop any clumsy slips onto the blade. The PITS is without a doubt my favourite non-locking Spydie, and being a law abiding citizen stuck on this rainy rock I do have more than a few!

Resurrecting this aged thread that DavidZ started, since I recently acquired his personal PITS from him, thank you very much DavidZ DavidZ

One thing that Dave did was to grind off that small flipper looking tab that was part of the guard design, I did not notice that it was a 'fix' done by Dave until I googled the folder and saw that all of them had this appendage which seemed to break up the flow of the overall look of the knife. I questioned Dave and he said that was something he did very carefully and what a great job he did too, looks factory issued ! The knife had been carried by Dave and has some snail trails on there as you would expect to happen on a Ti frame but the blade opens and is held in place quite secure, and the style of lock as you grip, will keep it open without much worry of it closing on you.

Here are some quick images of this folder, I sharpened her up a tad and the N690C0 took a nice sharp edge.
