Why no rift love?

My two favorite BMs are the Rift and Contego. Both great, and the Rift is especially great for EDC!

Exactly. I'd love an M4 Rift or an M390, S90v, S110v, or CTS XHP/204p something a little more for the price. I love the look of the G10 but for the same price the Contego takes it.


It would be a sweet companion for the Gayle Bradley I just bought because of the size and shape (similar to the Rift) and offered in that sexy M4
 
I loved the rift does seem like it should be more popular. Perfect size, looks good, nice blade shape, nice handles. Now that I'm back into knives I bought a contego based on my love of the rift. Just too much wasted space on the contego. Maybe I'll give the rift another go.

The Rift is probably my all-time favorite knife. I've even converted my two oldest sons to Rift users. I don't need custom scales for it either -- I just get the grey/black version and make my own colors.


Do you have the 950 or the 950-1? If you have the 950, then just get some RIT dye and take care of it yourself (Royal, Kelly Green, Denim Blue, Cherry Red):

Been having some tough times lately so haven't been on here for a while, but thanks for all the replies. Loony in, how did you do those scales? I have the plain black handle version, is that what all yours started as? Can't decide which color I like best, they all look really good.

Unfortunately, the all-black scales cannot be dyed (the 950-1). Only the gray/black scales of the 950 can be used for this. Benchmade charges $60 for a scale swap (!!!), so I actually put up a WTT thread when I had a 950-1, and someone who wanted all-black scales traded with me.

I dye the scales with liquid RIT dye, using the entire bottle in about 3 cups of water. I bring the liquid to a simmer and drop in the scales for at least 45 minutes before checking them, then pull them out every 30 minutes after that to check the progression. Once they were where I wanted them, I took them out, rinsed in cold water, and then washed them with Dawn soap, dried them and reassembled the knife.
 
One thing on the Rift and similar knife handles is that it causes the hand to slide back on the handle, where the Contego and others have a more pronounced guard area and your hand naturally moves toward the grip/guard area, for me I prefer that style of handle for just that reason. Also the Contego is a stretched out version of the Rift too, I'd say a shorter blade might be a better EDC but with the handle I had to pass. I had the Switchback but couldn't keep it for that reason, wonderful knife and great concept, just needed a more pronounced guard for my tastes.
