Why no sheath

I own a lot of knives from various manufactures and when I received them they all came with a knife sheath. Busse knifes are one of the most expensive knives around (and the best) but they don't come with a sheath. Why do we have to pay extra for a knife sheath that should come with the knife ?

this has been beat like a drum.

Its so we can get the knife cheaper.

It also allows Busse to do what they do which is to make us knives.

THen you don't waste money on a sheath that you wont use or either dont like.

Most collectors never even put their knives in the sheaths, and most users dont want a typical sheath.

SHeaths are more of a prefernce than the knives themselves once you start wearing em.

Many here would rather pick there own sheath, instead of paying for one they may not like or use. Many prefer leather, many kydex. Then there's the colors and styles many differ on.

If the sheath did come with knife the price would be higher, it's not like were paying "extra" when we order a sheath. Were just getting the sheath we want.

I though the same as you when I first got here, and it is a bit of extra wait to get a sheath. But now I love the way Busse does it as I can get my sheaths made exactly like I won't them.

For instance, I had the two I just got in made with more drop, since thats what I like. Can't get that custom fit if it comes with knife.

Honestly look at the sheaths that come with knives you have purchased in the past. Most of them are really cheap.

The leather is generally of the lowest grade possible and quite flimsy. The plastic sheaths are generally a generic molded type... also very cheap although somewhat more durable than the thin leather type.

Personally, I enjoy making my own sheaths for my knives.

Busse used to provide sheaths, and some of those dropleg kydex models that came with the Straights are quite nice.

However, like others here point out, there are a lot of Busses for which I would not want kydex.

From reading several threads asking this same question I came to the conclusions that:

Busse used to provide a sheath but no longer does to allow for a reduction in price of their knives which is then passed onto the buyer. A universal sheath would also not work as there are too many styles and thicknesses of knife to try and accommodate.

Anyway there's always the sprinkler head route....................

From what I understand, at one time Busse DID include a basic nylon sheath with the knives. However, the customer base decided that they did not like bing forced to buy a sheath that they didn't like and would rather buy their own sheaths. Why pay for something that you will not use? Buying a knife and then having to send it off to have a sheath made is a less than optimal situation, especially when you have an expectation of being able to carry a knife conveniently straight out of the box. But, buying a Busse is more like buying a custom knife than buying a big-factory knife (case, buck, etc), so why not have a custom sheath?

That being said, I would like to have the option of buying a serviceable sheath with the knife.

Seems that a couple of people beat me to the punch. Oh well.

This is increasingly becoming the option you have via the Company Store. Leather from Armoralleather and kydex from Squished Kitty (Mashed Cat).

It's gotten a much easier to get pants.

With all the new kydex workers and leather benders ;), not only have I not had to send off a blade (well, some customs) in a long while, I've gotten sheaths before the new knife showed up.

Just check out the exchange, sheath sub forum, and the Busse forum in general. There's lot's of sheath options available, and most of the makers have ready access to the knives.

Kinda backwards now, got this great sheath, can't wait for a knife to put in it

Yes, I like being able to pick my own sheaths...

no sheaths?!...every Busse comes with a sheath.
a TacCB-sheath with customised fluo-orange stickers...:rolleyes::D

For a knifemaker, or at least for this one, sheaths are a loosing proposition. They are time consuming, and the return on the time is less than from making the knives.

This is my understanding as well, basically folks complained and moaned about the old factory sheaths (which I thought were fine, not top-rate ninja operator quality but quite servicable) so they just stopped selling the sheaths and passed the savings onto us.... or maybe they just added a few extra features for the same cost... or something :)

At first it seems like a hassle to be forced to get a sheath. But it is the best way. I started making my own and it is great to carry a BUsse inn your own sheath. Also there are so many talented makers and such diversity that there is no trouble sheathing the knife. Also after you have chosen a knife like a Busse, any Busse, it makes sense to put in the effort to find the sheath that is right for you. Busse made the right decision

These excuses are hogwash (<< thats a pun).

If makers from Ranger to Gossman can provide a basic sheath, so can Busse. It certainly is not a spendy proposition for the seller (evidenced by knives costing 1/3 of a Busse price coming with a decent sheath), and the notion of associating the phrase "cost saving" with Busse is sorta funny. Its not a cost saving measure to me when I have to find an after-market sheath for my ASH 1 CG.

I know I'm in the minority on this one, but having a $20 option for a basic nylon sheath with plastic insert would be nice.

When I got my first Busse I knew that it did not come with a sheath and I did find that to be odd and a bit of a pain to have to buy a sheath separately. Then I got my first Okuden sheath. The fit and finish was great and the retention was absolutely incredible. To make things even better it was made to my specifications which allowed me to add a pouch and a smaller companion knife to it. I was very impressed with the end result. Now I don't even think twice about have a sheath made. I think it is really cool to be on a first name basis with my sheath maker and to be able to specify exactly how I want a sheath made. Considering that a Busse knife is a production knife with your own custom touches it only makes sense to have the same options when choosing a sheath.

winner! With the lead time of getting a sheath made, it would be nice to have the option of a basic sheath... just something to protect you from that razor sharp hog edge! I would love to be carrying my Active Duty, but have no sheath and need to get one made.

You also have to factor in the fact that many makers make thousands of the same exact blade style, is that they can order sheaths in bulk.

As Busse varies blade dimensions, length, width, and thickness, trying to stock numberous models of sheaths becomes a logistical nightmare, given their protocol of alternating blade styles throughout the year.

As well, there is a tax burden to have a sheath for say 4" knives carried on inventory while they are making and shipping 6" or 9" blades for a year.

Too, I would much rather have a maker keep price increases to the 10-12% range (as Busse did) total over an almost 10 year period than raise those prices more.

Their price increase came in view of increased production costs (labor, steel prices, new machinery, repairs, etc), and yet only that low nominal change??

Show me many other higher end product that only went up a nominal 10%
in an 8-10 year period.

There are many business reasons that went into the decision.
