Why not a skeletonized 112???

Wouldn't it be cool if Buck made a version of the 112 like the 186 (or 560)??? I think it would...and I thought I'd make a stab at hacking up a knife that might look like one...(if you kind of closed your eyes and squinted a little)... ;)

Disclaimer! I am not a knifesmith, or knifemaker, or anything skilled. I'm just a poor sob with a hammer and a saw. I don't do these things for money or even compliments, just for my own gratification. (So feel free to criticize; I don't mind). There are several knifemakers/smiths on this Forum who can fabricate a project like this; they would be happy to accommodate you, I'm sure.

I didn't bother scanning each step in this build, as I did in my Skeletonized 110 thread with *excruciating* detail... If you're really interested, it was pretty much more of the same...

But here are the main parts, already roughed out and ready to go together...They've been milled to the general final sizes, holes are threaded but not countersunk yet, the outer edges haven't been beveled yet, nor the lightening holes either...

I didn't use Titanium this time (nor ever again!:grumpy: ), so I decided on 303 Stainless Steel instead. The SS is .125", the brass is .062" again. The SHCS will be stainless #6-32 again also (I have many left).

Here's a look at the rough assembly so far...

Hopefully, I'll get a chance to bevel this weekend.

I'm really not all that fond of 112's...but the idea of a matched set of skeletonized Bucks kind of intrigued me... :D

WAY COOL:cool:, Trax...your going to have skeletons in your closet:p  :p. Preston

Ya know, Preston, I think the reason the 112 doesn't appeal to me is the shape of the blade...It looks like the blade on a finger nail clipper...

I think I need to modify a 112 blade...make the chamfer longer...

  :D ...Now yer talkin' Trax...That's the main reason I was so attracted to the drop point 112 concept...I'm not attracted to it's "stock" shape at all either. I was thinkin' of reshaping a 112 with an 8 inch wheel and seeing what I get. Gotta look for a grinder this week end. Great lookin' "skeleton" there Trax... :D :D

You should do it...:D :D :D

I happen to like the short stubby appearance of the 112. That said, the narrower, older 110 blades are growing on me, so perhaps the modded 112 will also. Preston

If you check your local welding supply shop, they have cutoff wheels in 10, 12, 14 inch dia...just double-nut them to a 5/8" bolt, chuck it in your lathe, and away you go! :D

That's always been my problem with the 112. If the chamfer were a quarter inch longer I think it would look a lot better. I've never cared enough to do the math, but is the chamfer on the 112 the same in relation to blade length as that of the 110? I don't think it is and the 112 looks a little unbalanced next to a 110.

It's funny, the older 110 blades were much narrower than they are today. The 112's on the other hand were originally much beefier than they are now. I agree with you that I really don't like the current 112 blade profile, but I did when they first came out.

Got a 86 and 95 112. The blade profiles are pretty close, but not the same.
What Chicken says about the nail clipper is pretty funny since the 112 is my "manicure kit".
Mike, if ya feel like doing something, can you post a pic of the older and newer 112 blades for comparison? Hey, at least I'm not asking to borrow money ;)

I don't have any newer versions but here's a photo of the first version from 1972.

Hey Mike...thanks for the pic of stubby. Good for me to know as I have seen some on flea bay and thought they were sharpened by someone with obsessive compulsive disorder.

Maybe Mr. P. can do a pic compare of two for a visual aid???

The 112 is now dear to me. Had never had one until a month or so ago and it is becoming a favorite "other woman".

I was watching an older one (two pin plus rocker) on flea bay but missed it when I had to go take care of some paper-work (bathroom).
Oh well...guess it wasn't meant to be.

Goose, it's dear to me also...I might try an overhead shot if you think it is needed for comparison. Preston

Too cool for school Preston
Again, I am impressed with the wood selection. Nice matching.
I do see the blade diff. The one w/o the nail nick reminds me of another I missed but couldn't afford anyway.

The 112<FG I have has the finish pretty worn to the dark wood. And the 112c NS has the dominant brown grain with black (a la "tiger stripe").

I wood like (get it "wood"...ha ha) to get a 110, 112, and 55 all with nickel and close wood pattern like you have shown in another pic. Got a shadow box with nothing in it.

Yeah, I am really liking the 112 for all around handiness.
Thank you Preston...
Goose.

I think the middle blade looks best...But the blade I have is an Idaho, so I'll have to wing it...

BTW: Someone pointed out that since this and the skel 110 are screwed together, I can add blades just by using longer screws and a 3rd brass liner/divider...if I had more blades...<sigh>...back to eBay...

Trax, after you said this I went and took another look at the blades, and another pic, just to make sure that it was different(longer chamfer) it is. Good luck with your re-chamfer. Preston

In that lighting/angle the woods don't look that close...but certainly still knice knives...

Mike, Preston,

Nice 112's! I like the 112 as much as I like the 110. Just seams like there are more custom/limited edition 110's for sale. So my collection currently has more 110's.

Got the beveling done today...I made slightly smaller lightening holes in the 112 than I used in the 110 (which was copied from a 560). The outer edges came out pretty nice. Tool marks of course, but I'm getting to like them... :D

I made the countersunk holes for the SHCS's a bit smaller than the 110, and I'll make my #6-32 SHCS heads a bit smaller in dia...I wanted to get a bit more chamfer/bevel, but it turned out about the same...

The bevels don't show up too well, but they're there... ;)

This is also the final surface finish for the flats of the SS scales...This is the "brushed" look I wanted on the 110 but couldn't quite get...I think I know how to do it to Titanium now...

When I get both the 110 & 112 buffed out [the brass], I'll post a final comparison pic of the two of them together...probably with longer chamfered blades...

My hat's off to you trax! Although you are to modest to claim the fame: you are truly a craftsman. Your new creation is awesome. I can't wait to see the side by side of the 110 and 112. Thank you for the pic's.
