Speaking from personal experience, I think you will find any version of the Albion Gladius to be a fully functional extremely tough little sword. Their construction and fit are first rate - better I'm willing to bet than the swords you mention. They aren't Waks and don't handle like Waks but I assue you they are excellent swords. Albion has all versions in stock now. Try one - if you don't like it I'm sure Albion will let you return it.

Go to http://www.plan-a.org/mmhw/swords.htm and click on the "Gladiator" link. Its not exactly a Gladius, but it is a short double edged sword that fits your size and price criteria.
